Which System Killed the Arcade??

Post by bonerlaw » Wed Feb 03, 2010 3:50 pm

Remember the days when you'd wait patiently for a game to load on you C64, Speccy.........or even Amstrad, only to find out it paled into insignificance compared to the arcade game....

But, which system or game killed the arcade??

For me, the original Playstation.

The very second I played Tekken 2 on PS was the turning point in my Arcade use. "Arcade Perfect" was always a hyperbolic statement to me before that moment.

Never touched an arcade cab since. Not even the subsequent Tekkens.

*I should say that I used to play Tekken 2 on arcade in anticipation of the home conversion. Once it was released I kept all my ten pees to myself from then on.

I'd say it was probably the PS1 - 1994 was around the time home console technology was catching up with the arcades and the PS1 with its fancy 3D graphics and strong software library changed the face of gaming significantly...

None of those , I am afraid

It was slot machines

Arcade owners realised that spending £1 per minute is more profitable than (potentially) £1 per hour

That always made me laugh about Arcade Racers. The more you play - the better you get. But conversely the less game time you actually got for your money, as you'd finish the game faster.

A quid for three minutes? censored that.

Another vote for PS1 here. The gap between the two had pretty much closed by then, and the home ports were starting to get more extras- arranged soundtracks, mini-games, story modes like Soul Blade's Edge Master Mode, and so on...

Although this is true as well! While the arcade machines get scrapped, the slot machines always stick around!

However, I do have a book on my shelf- Arcade Fever- that claims it was the NES that killed it off, because (and I quote) "Games such as Rampage and Ikari Warriors were cool in an old-school sort of way, but these new releases certainly weren't compelling or diverse enough to tear us away from Mario and Luigi anymore... We sat complacently on our couches, and forced game manufacturers to come to us, rather than the other way around." However, this is also the same book that tries to pass off the word 'Pooyan' as being an adjective to describe something really, really stupid, as part of a slightly strange running joke wherein the author has a vendetta on the game, so believing any word in this book is probably a mistake. Just threw this in here for another perspective.

i think it was,ok the saturn got some arcade ports aswell. But i think the psx did them perfectly, most of the early saturn ones where rushed.you could mention the dreamcast since soul calibur was perfect port..

As soon as I saw the thread title, I thought 'PS1' and it seems I'm not alone.

Finally we had home systems that weren't a huge gulf apart from the arcade. In many ways this was a good thing, but there wasn't much need for me to go to the arcade any more. It did still offer better guns and wheels, but at 50p-£1 a go, it was an expensive couple of hours compared to the comparative value of a shiny black disc.

I still like the odd visit, but the Wii is further eating into its territory.
