Should I buy a psp 1004 with custom firmw.?

Post by MediaCult » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:33 am

I think I remember some negative comments about this model, but there's a really nice offer up, and my psp 3004 can't emulate because of the limited hack avaliability.

What's with this model? Is it ok?

It's hardly complicated.

PSP 100x + 200x are fine with custom firmware.

You could buy any PSP and buy a pandora battery, do it yourself - takes minutes.

To be fair, I find it all confusing too.

It's actually a doddle, you're right.

It certainly is complicated.

Mediacult, that model is fine, you shouldn't have any problem with it. A PSP with cfw is brilliant, you shouldn't have any regrets.

I heard the D-pad was much better on the 2000. Could be just hearsay though, I've never played one.

The only problem you will ever have with the 'EARLY' revision 100x series PSP's were the screen blur from poor LCD's, they fixed this with the later version phats and is a non-existent issue with the PSP Slim (and subsequently PSP3000)

Other Limmitations (only when compared to the PSP2000) is 32MB ram (the PSP 200x/300x and Go have 64, some emulators and applications make use of this), there are however PSP100x equivilants to this.

PSP 100x - the 'x' is infact the country code of origin, "1003 is UK, once firmware flashed there are NO discernable difference between country models and ALL can easly be updated to Custom Firmware. CFW (Custom FirmWare) allows play of backups and home-brew, including your own PSx titles converted to PSP and as others will say here, once update to CFW, the PSP is by far the best Handheld for 'overall' emulation on the market.

With great SNES. and Flawless Megadrive (including MegaCD) emulation its a true joy to behold... also its worth noting I was playing around with Deadlus64 (N64 Emulator) it has come on in leaps and bounds its still has a way to go, but I was playing (yes playing as opposed to watching) MarioKart 64 on my PSP... now thats awesome!

Also I have information that PSPUAE will be getting an ASM core soon, this my retro-gaming chummies is VERY good news indeed!

I love the PSP, 1000 or 2000, amazing bits of hand held gaming.. at the moment I am slicing through the PSX version of Command and Conqure (NOD disk), this is interspersed between moments of Luna: Silver Star Complete / Chrono Cross and Gran Turismo.

Also been playing R-Type Delta and Einhander since I recently converted them from my collection of PSX games, ... really LOVING the RTYPE!!! *ahem... its bloody hard though...(Captin Zetr0 Pilot of the R13 Ceberus!! all the way BABY!) *ahem

Recently got the HD PSP remake of >Ultimate Ghost 'n Goblins< I spent wayyyy to much on this game in the arcades and I admit this looks like a Huge amount of fun indeed! (has this game been ignored by RG?)

Anyway - in the UK you should be able to get a PSP Phat for around the £60 second user and around the £85 mark for the PSP2000 (slim) second user -

I will urge a little caution the PSP2000 Slim 'n lite has had a 4 mother revisions, one of the wich (the pen-ultimate) one is a particular revision that cannot be permnametly firmware updated.

I have made a few posts here on the boards that will help you so have a search for PSP and Zetr0.... yeah.... i type a lot.... sorry about that.

Ok. I see that it's actually PSP model 1001 - is this blurry screen bad or? I just bid so... hehe. Anyway, what does the 32mb thing do? What games can't I emulate? I was mostly interested in SNES, NES, SEGA GENESIS, Arcade stuff like Mame emu, and such.

I am so imporessed by my 3004 that I think this will be a good purchase as well. But you guys say that a pandora battery is all it takes? I'm pretty sure that the 3004> versions aren't easily hackable. Then again, I wouldn't want to be messing around with my perfect and expensive 3004 so this one 1001 will be my try-out thing.

I bought a PSP 1003 and loaded custom firmware onto it without using a Pandora Battery. There's no need any more, since the ChickHEN .tiff exploit.

Basically what it does is boots your PSP into software mode custom firmware via an exploit, then you simply "update" your BIOS to custom firmware of your choice. I chose the ever-popular 5.0 M33-6 Firmware since it runs the various emulators and homebrews perfectly. Hell, you don't even need to install custom firmware as ChickHEN stays resident in the PSP's memory and so can run emulators and homebrew at any time. All it takes to remove it is to fully power down your PSP by holding the button in the Off position for several seconds. Not that there's any need to do that as the "soft off" mode of the PSP consumes virtually zero battery life anyway, so it's a moot point. I only went ahead with the BIOS update just to see if it could be done. I'd have been more than happy to stay with ChickHEN.

Plus it works on every single PSP except the "un-flashable" TA88v3 motherboards* (the download will tell you if you have that motherboard type btw)

http://pspslimhacks.com/easy-chickhen-c ... t-pandora/ (FYI: This link is to the PSP1000 and PSP2000 version. PSP3000 version is here: http://pspslimhacks.com/guide-to-chickh ... 00-ta88v3/ )

*Even if you do have the "un-flashable" TA88v3 motherboard PSP you can still run ChickHEN in software mode, you just can't flash the BIOS. So you can still play emulators and homebrew anyway.

My PSP has a new lease of life since I got a Photofast CR-5400 Pro Duo to Micro SDHC adapter plus two 8gig cards (class 4)
Once formatted your PSP thinks you have one 16gig card in it (apprrox 14 gig available) and now I have got mame, megadrive, snes and gba on it.

Cost was £10.50 for each of the micro sdhc cards and about £3.70 for the adapter on ebay. thats a lot cheaper than a 16gig pro duo card.

/Zetr0 Smugly grins with his CR=5400 with 2x16GB cards

Indeed the CR-5400, awesome! (32GB of gaming yummyness!) (well its actually only 29.5GB after format as they dont put a proper 16,384MB per card)
