Best ever coin-op
Which one was it? Which one made you think "This is f***ing amazing! This is what games are all about". Which one cemented the love of gaming in your heart forever?
Outrun for me. That machine was special. My jaw dropped the first time I saw it. and when I played it I was totally blown away. Outrun WAS the arcade for me, the pinnacle of the arcade era.

Yeah but the elbow trick wasn't apparent when you first played it was it.......Also you didn't have to use it, I never did, always relied on grabbing the baseball bat as soon as I could.crusto wrote:A worthy contender. Alas, let down by the "elbow" trick.HalcyonDaze00 wrote:Double Dragon
Lots of great games I could pick but Double Dragon is still the arcade game I remember above any other.

I loved it and spent loads of (my moms) cash on it as well. I absoloutely loved the way you could grab hold of people and repeatedly knee them in the faceHalcyonDaze00 wrote:Yeah but the elbow trick wasn't apparent when you first played it was it.......Also you didn't have to use it, I never did, always relied on grabbing the baseball bat as soon as I could.crusto wrote:A worthy contender. I have no problem with Outrun as a 1st choice, I think most people were stunned when they 1st played it. But Double Dragon was just so much fun, headbutts, knees to face, baseball bats, whips, big heavy barrels and rocks, + the added bonus of two players. Single player was great but getting on it with your mate as you rampaged through the levels was a thing of beauty. Whenever I think back to spending my days as a kid in the arcades of Manchester or Blackpool etc it is always Double Dragon that makes me smile the most.I loved it and spent loads of (my moms) cash on it as well. I absoloutely loved the way you could grab hold of people and repeatedly knee them in the face. Gaming gold, but its outrun for me.[/

Savage Quest!
A massive cab that shakes with each footstep, and an amazing game in which you are a Tyrannosaurus Rex, who must kill and consume everything else that bothers to walk past. Shame it never got any sort of home release...

Side scrolling beat em ups all the way for me. The Simpsons was my favourite back in the day (I loved the humour and the 4 player option), but just recently I've discovered Aliens Vs Predator on MAME and am loving it!

Next to Space Invaders the only game to really take over the arcades was Street Fighter II.
I think the winner has to be one of them.
Outrun was a great game though.

Are people picking the best or their favourite?
Mine can (and does) fall into both categories with fairly little argument... Robotron!

They are both regarded as important titles - but what's YOUR favourite?Andykiwi wrote:Next to Space Invaders the only game to really take over the arcades was Street Fighter II.

I'm torn between two - I've gone purely on the reaction I had when I first spotted these in an actual arcade -
Star Wars Cockpit Cab - with memories of the filmn still fresh, imagine seeing this thing for the first time, with it's unusual vector graphics, sampled speech, and a cockpit you can climb into! This thing outshone everything around in 1983, there weren't even many cockpit vector cabs at the time.
but the winner is Space Harrier.
Again - deluxe motorised cab version. Much as I love OutRun, Space Harrier did everything OutRun did but better - the full-motion experience, the graphics, much faster pace, more to do, more exciting gaming experience overall. I've banged on enough about this game in the past!
We have our winner </thread>

Alas, I was not faithful to one game for long and it was not any one game that won my love but rather the whole idea of video games.
One game is never enough!
