Favourite Retro Mag?

Post by crusto » Sun Sep 06, 2009 9:43 pm

I know theres loads of candidates so a poll isnt ideal, but what was your favourite read of yesteryear?

All in all I loved C+VG the most. I dont know why, I suppose its because I had the most fun reading it. Mean Yob was a real laugh.

Of those listed, Crash is the only one that comes remotely close to Zzap 64! The rest don't even register for me.

I hate to do this but I voted 'other'.

#1. Your Sinclair.
#2. ST Format.
#3. Amiga Power.
#4. Edge. (The early years!)
#5. New Computer Express.

Sega Saturn Magazine was most definitely my favourite read. It had really good reviews and very knowledgeable writers, plus the mag was gorgeously designed, still love reading it to this day. Amiga Power is another magazine I used to love reading, would love to get hold of some old copies.

Out of that list I guess Zzap64 was the best there but I also liked CVG a lot (and Mean Machines lol) in it's early days late 80-early 90's.

I voted 'other' - my fave mag was Total! - I also used to read Sega Power and before that 'Your Sinclair', all missing from your poll!

Seriously? A poll without Your Sinclair?

I understand you can't include every computer magazine ever, but no YS????

Super Play was the magazine that changed how I looked at gaming and made me appreciate it as a cultural thing rather than a childhood hobby. And it pretty much introduced me to anime and manga as well. Helen McCarthy's column had nothing to do with the SNES, but I looked forward to it every month. I missed out on the first two issues, actually, and hadn't heard about it as I never cared much for games mags before SP beyond the odd issue of CVG and Your Sinclair. But I saw the Christmas issue in its bag with Wil's awesome artwork in the newsagent when collecting the papers for my round and never looked back.

Considering how shitty the SNES's presence was in Europe, the magazine's focus on imports and especially Japan and J-RPGs made me love the console like no other. It's quite incredible to think that we got cover games like KiKi KaiKai 2, Breath of Fire and Front Mission. I knew things had gone a bit wrong when its N64 successor put Kevin Keegan on the cover.

I look back now and see how some of the SP review scores could be a little off, but overall they were more trustworthy than any magazine I can think of from that era.

Hard choice between Super Play, Mean Machines and Commodore User Commodore 16/plus 4 era.. I still have every issue of Super Play and Mean Machines and to of the greatest magazines ever..

As Team Alfie with Super Play loved how they reviewed every obscure Super Famicon game.. I started buying Super Play from issue 9 due to the amazing Turbo Chun Li cover made me by a snes

Zzap! It's the best magazine I've ever read, though I think it lost some of it's magic at time went on. I read it until October '87. The One and CU Amiga were also great mags.

Sega Power, especially from around Issue 50 onwards, when they seemed to've lost all sense of reality and every issue was a 100-page tirade of swearing and nonsense. Hilarious stuff!

I also liked Game Zone, for its amazing covers and strange editorial pages.
