Cassette 50

Surely this release has to go down as one of the most unique in gaming history. Never before , since , or in the future are there ever likely to be 50 never-before-seen games released on one compilation. I'm sure this would make for a great feature , with reviews of maybe a few of the games , and a look at the great way in which they were usually advertised with a 'free' calculator watch. It would be interesting to see how the games were collected , whether they were quality-controlled checked in any way , and whether any famous names of the future had games included on the compilation. Also , although they were universally panned as being amongst the worst games ever released , are there any 'diamonds in the rough' deserving of attention?

Generally speaking, the games were pitched by random programmers in much the same way that magazine type-ins were; send the thing in to Cascade, see what happens. There was an interview with Matthew Lewis (who wrote Galaxy Defence which was on the Spectrum version) where he said that they paid him a tenner for the rights...

I keep hearing about Cassette 50 in the magazine and I'd certainly like a full article on it. It sounds like it has the reputation. Darren, is there a staff writer you really can't stand anymore? Maybe game-by-game walkthroughs....

Sod it, i can do that... i've got what i should probably see as a worrying tolerance for such things and have played everything on the C64, Spectrum and VIC versions of Cassette 50 (as well as Wicked 50 Games on the C64) previously...

There were no gems on Cassette 50 at all, all were crappy BASIC games. Think most kids bought it for the cheap calculator watch back then, the other 'clever' game was 'Dont Buy This' by Firebird.

Clever as in they warned you how bad it was, 5 of the worst games you will see they said in the advert...

But despite the warnings it still sold a fair few from what i remember. Bizarre !

Didn't you do a remake of one of the Cassette 50 games?
[Nods] Invasive Action was based on Ivasive Action from the C64 version of Cassette 50.

Mine is balanced on top of the 1084S in my office, amongst the curently incomplete pile of "stuff what i was involved with developing". =-)

Well while on the subject of incomplete stuff you are involved in developing, did you fix that Balls game and will that other version of Kikstart C16 ever get completed?

Ah, not sure where that one got to and it wasn't me coding it; he's been sidetracked as usual, this time working on the Wii!

Ah, a bit more recent than i was thinking! No, i can't find any reason why it'd choke on Vista Home unfortunately but i'm still looking.
