Yeah Goat Simulator looks a lot of fun, but for me seems like would be more fun on my lappy. Picked up Bubble Witch Saga 2 because it's free and actually it seems pretty damn decent so far, only sticking point is having new sections time locked. But it's free so meh, can live with that.

Still think Traps n Gemstones is superb....

No IAP's. Just a great old skool platformer 'metroid-vania' style game. Get keys, go to rooms etc, jump /shoot etc. Small filesize, a brilliant iOS game

Heres that great game ! Coming out at midnight, great homage to Jet Pac, i'm a huge fan of it (was lucky to get a promo code). Has lots of nods to the 8 bit era

Space Expedition: Classic Adventure
http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=247933

Really nice old skool 'metroid-vania-esque' game. Platformer with shooting, hidden rooms etc. Well worth picking up, apparently its quite a 'short' game but i've had a lot of fun with it so far

Mr Particle Man
http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=247111

Nice NES style game with quite a few retro nods. Try to get from point a to point b, lots of levels

Both are well worth picking up

Make sure you back up your apps !

Sadly Jeff Minter hasnt picked up his yearly developer account which means all his games (Goatup etc) on iOS are not available from the app store. Another reason to always backup your apps.

Sad but i spoke to Jeff at a few retro shows, seems that he just didnt get the sales he needed. Shame as his games were great on iOS

Oh that's no good. I've just bought a new iPad so my Minter apps aren't back on there yet. Does that mean they are lost to me forever even though I've bought them?

Do you have a back-up somewhere, or the apps on another device? If so, you can install from iTunes (former) or send your apps to your Mac/PC and then sync them with the new device (latter).

I always through you could get your previous purchases from iCloud, even if they've been deleted from the App Store, but it seems that's only the case if the dev account is still active. (So the likes of Squareball is also gone forever.) I guess if nothing else, it's a good reminder to—as horrible as iTunes is—also keep a collection of your apps (current and deleted) on your Mac/PC, in case stuff like this happens.

EDIT: Note also that if you think you might want to play a game in future, but don't want it messing up iTunes, you can just copy it out of the iTunes media folder to a back-up drive/disc, and then load it back into iTunes later.

Thanks for the info. I'll see what's what when I get home.

Isn't a massive loss I guess but a bit annoying for sure!

It is suicidal not to backup your apps though. Got most of mine on Dropbox, started with Gridlee as i knew that would be taken off the app store so backed up the app. Now back them all up (so easy to get free cloud storage).

Often here over on Touch Arcade people not being able to reinstall apps as the devs not signed back on or just simply left development. Always back up your favourite ipa's !!

Phew someones found a fix !

If you have an iCade and Gridlee (MAME) and found since ios8 has come out its messed it up (eg stutters A LOT) then this fix works...

"Ok people, I think i've sorted this out (i hope so): just check if you have "split keyboard" setting enabled (in General > Keyboard). If you do, try to disable it and test your games again. On my iPad 3/iOS 8.1.1 this setting was the guilty one! Now everything's working fine (Gridlee/Mame4IOS included). Oh, and if it's working for you, please spread the word around the interwebs, because this is nasty and neither ION or Apple have been very helpful to this day."

Just tried it and works fine, i think ios8 instantly turned this setting on which messed up Gridlee.

Phewww ! My mame machine is back !

neither ION or Apple have been very helpful to this day.
Ha! Funny how a manufacturer of essentially obsolete hardware (due to MiFi) and the company that actually banned the named apps wouldn't be helpful about this issue!

On iOS, I do hope everyone's gone out and bought Mr. Particle-Man, which psj3809 mentioned earlier. It's an excellent game with so many nods to classic fare but also modern touch controls. It received strong critical acclaim, but, as ever, Apple entirely ignored it and it's been something of a financial disaster for the dev. It'd be good if he got a few extra quid from RG readers who love a good retro-style arcade game.

Other retro-oriented fare quite recently that's worth buying:

Helix: Arena shooter, without shooting. Instead, you encircle your foes. Reminiscent of Eugene Jarvis fare. Extremely tough and addictive.
Crossy Road: Endless Frogger with fab graphic and a wicked sense of humour.
Reckless Racing 3: Top-down arcade racer. A bit light regarding its physics, but lots of fun.
Space Age: Sweet old-school adventure with some stellar writing if the odd iffy arcade section.
Drift'n'Drive: Frenetic vertically scrolling racer, reminiscent of a demented Bump 'n' Jump without the jumping but instead with plenty of fire-powered boosts.

Yep some good nods there. Crossy Road is a good laugh. Drift n Drive i would love to play on my iphone but its ios 8 only (boo hiss ;) so i cant play that on my jailbroken iphone.

Mentioned it earlier but please try...

Space Expedition: Classic Adventure

Just a great old skool platformer/Metroidvania game

I reckon before Xmas the new RPG from Crescent Moon (Exiles) - http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=182651 will be out before the app store closes for Xmas. Hope it comes out then

Also Oversteer (http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=224745) looks to be very good, coming out in a week or two

I'm still loving iOS gaming, there was an update to Tomb Raider which makes the controls a 'bit' better. Also got into Year Walk FINALLY, surreal strange game but enjoying it

Year Walk is utterly fantastic — a bold, imaginative and daring attempt to do something different. Really atmospheric, too, with some genuinely scary moments. If you like that, also consider Device 6, Simogo's follow-up, which further pushes the notion of interactive narrative and identity within videogames. (The dev's most recent, The Sailor's Dream, takes this to its natural conclusion, essentially dispensing with puzzles in favour of fragmented narrative; but I felt that, while still engaging and interesting, could have done with giving you more agency.)

Yeah i've avoided spoilers and did get a bit stuck but i've moved on a bit more in the game. I tend to take my time with so many apps, i always see people on some game threads 3 hours later saying 'completed it!' like its a race. (Plus to be fair i'm an 'app dipper' as well which doesnt help !)

But yeah i also want to finish it soon as its about 700 meg and space is tight ;)
