Head Over Heels

Post by The Master » Mon May 18, 2009 12:37 pm

I've just tried playing this for the first time and I CAN'T WORK OUT WHAT THE FRAK TO DO.

I know I can switch between them by pressing S and that, but what's with that damn floating rabbit!?

The rabbits are power-ups.

Basically, guide Head and Heels through the maze .... they'll meet up.
Once joined, you 'll have to teleport to each planet (get on the teleporter and press JUMP)
Once in a planet, go through each screen till you find the crown for that planet ..... collect it.
Finally, on the last planet, there's a screen which you go to with a heavely guarded teleporter ..... get on that, teleport, game completed!

I have completed Head Over Heels .... THREE TIMES

Once on CPC, once on Amiga and once on the Speccy.

Although, revisiting it, I'd struggle to repeat that!

Is there an actual ending?

Well, yes, there is.
Not an overly exiting one though.

Also, the ending is the same on all versions.

I'm not gonna detail it, as I don't want to spoil it for anybody.

For those of you that haven't played it (and are not going to), or are simply no good at it and cannot be ar5ed, you can watch the ending here:

you can also find links from that page to watch a play through of the entire game............

Always thought HOH was overrated tbh, personally. Batman was the better isometric puzzler for me

I still can't work out what to do. Both the pig...cat...what?...things, are already right near each other when I start. There's a walkway thing which kills the one, and the other is left alone in a room with an unreachable rabbit and a thing to sit on that goes "bong". Am I just too old?

Yes, they start in adjacent cells, but no, they can't join up there.
Head can glide when he jumps, so you can zig-zag as you jump to climb the ladder of blocks in the corner to reach the rabbit (it's an extra life) - but you don't have to.
All you can then do is stand each character on the transporter blocks in the corners of their cells and press jump to teleport out into another room, and make your way from there. Eventually, each character will fall into a market square where they can finally join up.
On the way, Heels can collect a large bag, that lets him pick up and drop one object in a room.
Head can collect a doughnut gun and ammo that lets him stun enemies.
Check the setup screen to redefine the keys and find all the controls.
There are some fish that act as save points, and more bunnies that act as extra lives or power-ups (faster running, higher jumping, etc.) You might also find some puppies arranged in staircases. These vanish if Head enters the room. Only Heels can use them as stairs, on his own.

See, see... that's the crucial bit I was missing.

Depending on the emulator you use you might be able to use rzx files, these are like recordings of people playing the actual game.

Its quite cool as you can set the emulator to 10 x speed to get to a certain point then stop it and take over yourself. (Or see how to complete it).

http://www.rzxarchive.co.uk/ - You can download various rzx recordings from here which are useful. Or over on World of Spectrum if you find Head over Heels in the archive theres often links to the 'tipshop' which has pokes/cheats/walkthroughs etc.
