Favourite Mega Drive moment

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Tue Feb 24, 2009 4:39 pm

We're doing a feature to celebrate how great the Mega Drive was (they will hopefully be others based on how popular this one is) and what to know your favourite Mega Drive moment. It can be game or hardware related (or even something else, just tell us what it is and the best should get into the mag.

My first Megadrive "moment" was on Revenge of Shinobi. Only played it for about 10 mins in a local shop. Was in awe for months.

All hell breaking loose on level three of Strider, and changing into a werewolf for the first time in Altered Beast.

Receiving my first ever Mega Drive console with Sonic The Hedgehog and Strider on my 13th Birthday (1993) after I came home from school. That was a magical moment.

finding a Megadrive in a charity shop in 2004 - it brought back all the good times - and got me into
retro gaming from that moment

The vibrancy and quirkiness of Micro Machines and the awesome gun play and screen filling bosses of Super Probotector. I emulated Probotector recently and was utterly abysmal at it compared to when I was a young'un

Playing Master system games on it

Or seeing it getting all its holes filled with useless addons things
It was like some strange kinda orgy

Opening Beggar Prince and putting the cartridge in the console, since it was the first game to be released for the system in about eight years! A truly surreal experience.

That's a fine moment, and one I can well relate to

Being serious...

I loved the Sonic & Knuckles 'plug thru' cart and how it breathed new life into my other Sonic games, even the first one with a multi-level version of the bonus round. It was a fantastic idea, and one that's never been repeated.

Playing Micro Machines 2 with 8 people on 4 controllers. Only did it once, maybe twice, but it was the best gaming moment for me until I hit me 20's.

Realising that R-Type is a lot easier if you detach from the Force pod at certain places.

(Master System games running via a Powerbase Converter count, don't they?)
Repeated play ensures success.

Me and my brother having late, late, late nights playing Micro Machines 2 and Zombies with a bottle of Dr. Pepper and some Ocean Colour Scene on the CD player.

Ooh, and playing Sonic 2 for the first time, Sonic 3 for the first time, and Sonic & Knuckles for the first time.
