What did you have back then?

Post by crusto » Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:35 pm

Im sure most of you on here have amassed some great collections. But what did you own back in the day? I didnt have enough foresight to keep hold of all of mine, plus it would have meant not getting the "newer" machines at the time.

In the early 80's i inherited my brothers old wooden atari which gave me the bug!
approx 1983-4 i got an atari 800xl
1985-87 amstrad cpc 464
1988 sega master system
1988 pc engine
1991 sega mega drive
1993 super nintendo
(time then gets blurred)
ps2 and pc

somewhere along the line ive hgot a gameboy color, gameboy advance, ds, and psp.

Ive probably forgot other stuff along the way.

After finally vowing not to get rid anymore I now own

turbografx 16
my original megadrive and everything from the ps2 onwards. And havent listened to my own advice and just cashed in on suikoden 1 and 2 which I only bought a year or 2 ago. (effing credit crunch!)

My first machine was a TI99A from Texas Instruments from my father. Shortly after that I got the C64 which I used quite some time. Although I couldn't read nor write at the time, I managed to load my games. Simply recognized the order of the characters for it :D
That were my only two until I got a SNES. And after that my life as a PC gamer began until the Playstation 2...but that's not retro yet, is it? ;)

All my other machines I bought one after one with my own money. But it's great to discover gems on consoles one never had. It's really just like playing a brand new game :D

I had my NES for Christmas from my parents in 1990. For years and years I only ever owned the same 8 games, but god I loved that console!

A year or two later my dad and I were given a Spectrum. It didn't get used very much so it was sold off at a carboot :(

My next system I had was the original Game Boy which a good friend of the family gave me for one of my birthdays. I was always seen playing Donkey Kong Land, Link's Awakening and Super Mario Land.

Then in 1996 that same family friend gave me the PlayStation 1 for Christmas. I had 7 games plus a ton of demo disks to go with it. I remember hogging the TV in the front room all day and virtually all night playing Tomb Raider, G-Police, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot and Jurassic Park. This was when my love for gaming really did kick in.

I didn't have anything else then until my parents gave me the PS2 for Christmas in 2001. Started collecting other systems and retro stuff from around 2004 onwards when I had a job and could afford my own things.

My first computer was a Spectrum 128k +2. It would have been the christmas of 86 or 87, loads of kids at my school had them and there was never a shortage of games being traded on c60 cassettes. I got years of use from this and even when i'd moved onto bigger and better things i'd still get it out every now and then. It's had some DIY surgery performed on it after the tape deck packed in but its still in working order, not that you'd guess to look at it though.

Next thing i got was a Sega Master system in the late 80's/early 90's. The cost of games was prohibitively expensive and piracy just wasn't an option here. Its probably my least favourate of everything i've owned but was still worth having for Shinobi alone. I got rid of this the following year though when it was replaced with the best computer of all time...

The Atari ST... Without a shadow of doubt my favourate machine of all time. The games were still pricey but piracy was rife and everybody i knew who owned an ST had hundreds of games because of this. The following years most of my friends got themselves Amiga's, Megadrives or SNES's. I wasn't the least bit jealous that their games made many of mine look poor in comparison. Until the ST version of Street Fighter 2 came out that is, not so much a poor mans version of the game but a tramps version. I really needed a SNES...

...So i got one, initially just so i could play that one game. After that i went to the N64, Playstation, Dreamcast, Xbox and that brings me right upto date with the 360. Theres been a Gamegear, Jaguar and DS in there as well but i'm really not sure where they fit into the time frame.

I didn't have a lot back then.
All I had was:
  • Commodote 16
  • Amstrad CPC6128 (which my brother gave me)
  • ZX Spectrum 16k (which my uncle gave me)
  • Amiga 500+
  • Super Nintendo (SNES)
  • Atari 520STfm (picked it up dirt cheap off a mate)
  • Amiga CD32 (save up for this)
  • Sony Playstation
So not a great deal. I'm not sure of timings thogh, so the above list isn't in any kind of order.

We had just the Commodore 64 for 11 years from 1983 until I bought an Amiga 1200. Then I used that until 1997 when I bought my first PC. It wasn't until around 2005 that a friend persuaded me to buy a Dreamcast, and at the time it was the first console I'd ever owned!

I had a C64(my Dad did have a ZX80 for a while, but I never got to use it!:(), and had that for about four years until I got an Amiga A500(Flight of Fantasy pack). Then had that four about four years then got a 486 SX 33 Mhz PC, and played Dune 2, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Pinball Fantasies, and Civilisation(on hard disk).

Gameboy Advance SP - 2004
Gamecube - 2005
DS - 2005
