Resident Evil 4-death of a series?

Post by krusty40 » Sat Jan 31, 2009 7:17 am

Resident Evil 4 was nothing but a combat-heavy action adventure game with none of the atmosphere of the previous games and none of the puzzles. agree or disagree?

The atmos of the last games is still there

So the chainsaw guy didnt make you panic ?
The lack of puzzles was kinda nice but made it into more of a shooter

Did it kill the series or did it reinvent it?

I wouldn't say it killed the series, just marked the start of a new direction. I think a lot of the jumps and scares were replaced with a better combat system, and I did miss the usual zombies, but it is still a great game IMO. And the chainsaw guy definitely makes me panic!

Sure it was a departure from the previous games but the atmosphere/tension is still there - gangs of dangerous fast paced ganandos vastly outnumbering you, the lethal Chainsaw enemies (especially scary when you can simply hear him, but not see him :D ) not to mention the Regenerators (my fav enemy). There is also the brilliant scene where you revist the village at night, you can hear the enemies but all you can see are the glowing sinister red eyes of the enemies. So, I disagree with it ruining the series. Bring on RE5.

Hard to say right now, I loved the game but wouldn't want it to turn in to a japanese gears of war.

I bought a RE4 GC specifically for RE4.

For me, it kick-started the series. I wasn't a fan before that.

Anyone looking for RE4 on PS2? I've got a spare special edition tin copy kicking about.

Anyone who says that Resident Evil 4 didn't make them panic at any point is a liar. There's a good few action setpieces in that game where enemies come flooding in from all directions and you have to hold them off for a bit. Even right at the start when you first enter the village and they all come charging straight at you. Can't believe that nobody would be at least a bit shaken by that.

I was a big fan of the original style RE games, but RE4 blew me away regardless. I always thought the puzzle aspect of the series was quite weak outside of the original game and remake anyway.

The series had to change, the formula was getting a bit thin with both RE3 and RE0 seeming lazy and half hearted to me. Code Veronica was the perfect last hurrah before the nigh-on perfect remake.

RE4 has plenty of tension and panic inducing moments- the gloomy autumnal opening areas offer a less cliched horror setting- the farm and swamp areas in particular. Only the hilariously bad plot detracts from it.

The PS/Wii Gun Survivor/Umbrella Chronicles spinoffs are pretty duff though.

Mmm- first time I shot a female villager in the face really shocked me (having earlier found one pinned to the wall of a hut by a pitchfork through the head). The blood curdling scream made me feel quite uncomfortable as she staggered back clutching her face.

The whole first chunk of that game had a slightly Texas Chainsaw Massacre- albeit European- rural nastiness to it.
