Opinion of the Sega Saturn

Post by lexiomiguel » Mon Jan 05, 2009 5:33 pm

I have an interest in getting my hands on one of these but I was wondering what everybody's opinions were of this financial failure of a system.Is it a waste of time or sorely underrated.Does it have any major flaws or hidden gems?Please post.

I've heard people say it was the ultimate 2D console... I had one for a while and the 3D wasn't too bad either, SEGA Rally felt just as good as the arcade version, and from memory Outrun was the most accurate outside the arcade.

I sold it for a Playstation in the end.

There are a lot of (good) SMUPS and 2D fighters.

Hurry and pick one up as the prices seem to be rising all the time.

Stunning 2D, Arcade and more than competent 3D games aplenty on the good old Saturn.

FPS - Get Quake and Exhumed. Avoid Doom and Hexen.
Racing - Get Wipeout 2097, Daytona CCE and Sega Rally. Avoid Touring Car and Destruction Derby.
Platform - Get Bug!, Bug Too!, Croc. Avoid Johnny Bazookatone.
Expensive Classics - Get Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers and Guardian Heroes. Also Nights into Dreams.
Shooters - Get Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 (Zwei)
Fighting - Get Fighters Megamix, Virtua Fighter 2, Street Fighter Alpha (2). Avoid Toshinden.
Dedicated, helpful, friendly forums - Click on my sig. Avoid wehate sega.com :P

Hope that helps!
Thoughts and prayers.

I agree Wipeout 2097 is a very good 3D effort on the Saturn.

Panzer Dragoon Saga can be quite expensixe (if you get it for less that £50 you're doing very well), but Panzer Dragoon Zwei can be picked up fairly cheeply (less than a tenner is common)

Most definitely not! This I believe was one of the reasons Sega fans felt aggrieved when the DC came out...

the saturn was and is a great machine.people said it couldnt do 3d at the time,when all they had to do was take a look at the big 3 that came out sega rally,virtua cop and virtua fighter2 to see if it could do 3d or not.
in terms of 2d it couldnt be touched with great games and also the advntage of the memory cart which gave you an extra meg of ram for the more intense 2d games.

I don't want to get into a flame war, so will just give my opinion and move on.

The Saturn is Sega's low point. I am yet to find a game that I am wowed by and the (accessible) ones that people mention have all left me underwhelmed.

Luckily Sega listened to every fault in the Saturn and corrected them when they made the absolutely brilliant Dreamcast.

Its a great machine.Loads of great games,few of them didn't make it out of japan.But a lot would have english text.It can be expensive to collect games do i.e if you want to become an collector.Otherwise you can get great gems really cheap.

IMO, Sega's low point was when they released those two usless add-ons (Mega CD and 32X) and when the Saturn was released, people had lost faith in Sega and just bought Playstations.

I don't care if I get into a flame war, it's not my fault if people don't agree..
The machine is awfull, theres nothing really on it that can be classed as "must have" and all the multiformat games mentioned on this page are better on other machines.

If you can pick one up for a fiver or so it's well worth the money, anymore than that and you are wasting your money on a machine that can only play import 2D shoot 'em ups or poor versions of 3D playstation games.

Wipeout 2097 = Playstation
Quake = PC
Croc = Playstation
Resident Evil = Playstation
Tomb Raider = Playstation
And so on and so on...
