Virtual Console Shmups recommendations..

Post by Nezbutz » Tue Oct 07, 2008 3:17 pm

Hi

Can anyone recommend me a quality Shoot em Up on the Virtual Console, something in the area of Salamander style. I have Wii points burning a hole in my pocket!!

Star Soldier R on Wiiware is your best buy, I loved that game :) I suppose the obvious recommendation is R-Type but there's a a fair few knocking around, just look for the games that are randomly 100 points more expensive  Still waiting for the good stuff on neo geo, with nintendo's release schedule it will probably be a long wait.

I only have R-Type on the TG-16 on Wii, that of course is very good.
Only own five other games, they are:
- Wave Race
- Ocarina of Time
- Super Metroid
- Sin and Punishment
- Super Marioworld

Not a bad collection though, have 400 points left, bah, not enought to get even a NES/C64 game! :(

The Air Zonk games are ok, Axelays on there, which I haven't got but gets a good write up and Star Parodiers all right as well.
Splink!

If you want Salamander style horizontal action and not vertical shooters you want Gate of Thunder on the PC Engine - it's pretty much a PC Engine CD version of Thunderforce and is flippin' ace. I think Lord of Thunder is also on there now - that's more of a gothic shooter, think Gynoug but also awesome.

I'd defo recommend Gate of Thunder.

For vertical action again stick to PC Engine and get Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier and Soldier Blade and I think Gunhed is on there as well under it's weird western name which is Blazing Lazers. All 4 of those are class.

For the best way to play, if you have a widescreen TV get it set back to 4:3 ratio or they all look stretched out and rubbish. Wii won't auto format for you.

Oh and the already mentioned Axelay is pretty much the spiritual successor to Salamander - it shares so much in common it's crazy. It has the up-across-up-across level changes, a fire level, some very similar enemies and is also by Konami. I would love to know for sure, but I think Axelay is often said to have been made by Treasure before they were Treasure and I would guess/presume that the same guys made Salamander too or at least some of them were involved in both games.

I quite like the PC Engine version of Dragon Spirit (also on VC)...it's hard as nails but very addictive. Galaga '90 is worth a look too, I keep going back to it.

Galaga 90 came as a really nice suprise for me, it very playable and it only cost me £1.25 for a slightly tatty boxed hucard

If you want something in the style of Salamander, you might want to wait for Gradius ReBirth on WiiWare. Japan got it a month ago, so hopefully its arrival over here isn't too far off.

As I've pointed out a bit back, arguably Axelay is defo the closest game to Salamander there ever will be short of Salamander 2 being on there due to it using the same horizontal-vertical alternating level arrangement and being made by Konami :)

The new Gradius is a good shout though, can't wait for it myself..
