RG Forum's Retro Game Club (Game 18) - Golden Axe ( SMS )

Post by Sir Arthur » Fri Oct 03, 2008 10:47 am

Game: Golden Axe
Manufacturer: Sega
Year Released: 1989
Platform: SMS
Screenshots, Arcade Version: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7966

The player controls one of three characters in this horizontal-scrolling fighting game that features many different enemies and scenes. Mounted enemies (riding dragons, etc.) can be knocked off and the players themselves can then ride the creatures.

There are three different player characters and each of them uses a different kind of magic: Ax Battler, the barbarian uses earth magic; Tyris Flare, the amazon uses fire magic; and Gilius Thunderhead, the viking dwarf uses lightning magic. Each player character also each has a different weapon: Ax Battler and Tyris Flare both use swords and Gilius Thunderhead uses the Golden Axe.

The object of the game is to find and destroy Death Adder in order to rescue the king and princess whom he had kidnapped. Also, Death Adder killed Ax Battler's mother, Tyris Flare's mother and father and Gilius Thunderhead's brother. So, you must also help each player character avenge the deaths of their loved ones.

I have a great soft spot for this game and IMHO The soundtrack to the 1st part of Turtle village is one of the best sound tracks in any game.

I am sure you can all find this somewhere, have a blast of the SMS or Mega Drive version if you can however the Arcade version ( I asume ) is kicking around on Mame and is easy to find on Xbox Live arcade.

Have fun guys.

I actually own this game on SMS. You've given me an excuse to dig it out now.

I love the mega drive version, still play it at least once a month with a mate after tenniis (one day we'll beat it without losing a life)

I look forward to seeing how the MS version matches up to it, via the PSP.

That's as long as I remember to play it, I've missed the last few game clubs cos I've been really busy and forgotten to play them :-(

Guys just had a great day yesterday after playing Golden Axe on the SMS, then on my PSP via the Mega Drive collection and then with my fave version on Xbox Live Arcade.

I was  at just how fast the SMS version was and thats the 50Hz version.

You know I have been doing some reflecting over the weekend, We had a local swimming centre in the 80's that had a great arcade, Golden Axe was one of the more popular games in there, I cant beleve its almost 20yrs ago me and the lads where in there playing for hours with Erasure's Drama blasting away in the background, where the hell has all that time gone, I was only 14 then.

The SMS GA hasn't aged as well as its bigger brothers, but is still an ace scroller. Even just for the dragon magic effect.
Thoughts and prayers.

This was the very first conversion that I've played before switching to the Mega Drive port. I was quite impressed with the presentation of this game, which the graphics are well drawn for the 8-bit console. A bit short though, but still worth having a go on.

That's right. It's due to hardware limitation meaning that few changes were made in this conversion. Framerate was reduced and game ending included footages from the Conan film. With characters such as Gillius and Tyris being removed, you have the choice of three magics to choose from. Also the main protagonist's name was changed from Ax Battler to Tarik.

Not only that, you only get the choice of Ax Battler. Someone didn't proof read their blurb...
Great game though, this was one of the first SMS arcade ports I'd played. Don't think I ever finished it *runs off to find PSP*

hmmm... think i need to try this on something other than my psp

Seemed to be running a tad fast (50Hz rom emulated at 60Hz perhaps)
The music seemed like a bad midi-dance remix

Twas awfullly blue too, blue floor/cliff, blue chicken leg, blue bosses

Quite liked the pic of Ax when it boots up though

I have it on the MD, and I play it all the time with a mate (we often find during tennis matches we end up whistling/humming/dah de dah-ing the credits tune to each other)

I thought this would be the ideal opportunity for myself to check out how the SMS port stood up
