I think it would be interesting to see what everybody on this forum ranks as there top five game types.
I don’t mean specific games or ‘games that are like another game’.
Apart from that you can be as general or specific as you like.
List your top five in preference order with your most favoured game style or genre first:
This might make an interesting article
I’ll list mine to kick off...
1) ‘Old style’ top-down RPG games, must have a good involving story.
2) Adventure games with an involving story. This can be anything from text adventures through to modern 3rd and 1st person titles; as long as there is a good story that drives the game!
3) Top-down ‘God Sim’ Games with a strategic element.
4) Side scrolling beat-em-ups (8bit to modern variations on this theme)
5) Shoot-em-up’s, can be ‘old school’ or newer pesudo-3D vertical or horizontal

GGGnnnnhhhhh! So...hard...to...write...serious...answer...
I'll try...
1) Sand-box style RPGs with emphasis on character development.
2) Other types of RPGs and 3rd person action-adventures with a very strong story.
3) Strategy games (I prefer turn-based, but some real-time have rocked my world recently)
4) I've got a real soft spot for decent survival horror titles
5) Scrolling beat 'em ups are usually great fun (I like Growl!)
There. That wasn't so hard.

I had'nt really thought about a
Worst list. Probably because I don't personally have any games of my 'worst types'.
Although there are individual products in my best types list that I think are really bad!
If I had to pick a worst list it would have to be:
1) Sports games. I can only think of two that I've ever really played. I especialy don't like football games, only American football games are worse!
2) The current 'run of the mill' batch of FPS games that seem to have saturated the market

3) Arcade / Adventure (Like Starquake)
4) Driving Games
5) Golf (!!) Games
tbh though I enjoy any game which has that "one more go" addictivness. No matter which genre it belongs to.
