Spectrum games
I know this has been done a million times. But can anyone recommend any Spectrum games? I have quite a few but have been a bit disappointed by the quality of some of them.
I have:
Atic Atac: Its okay but what the hell am i suppose to be doing?
Batman: Great game.
Chuckie Egg: Fantastic game, my fave.
Demons Revenge: Haven't played it.
Dictator: Doesn't work.
Horace And The Spiders: Rubbish.
Manic Miner: Good but hard.
Mugsy: Haven't played it.
Starquake: Great game.
Renegade: Frustrating. I was expecting a bit more from it.
I have a few more but i can't remember their names.
I'm looking to buy:
3D Deathchase
3D Ant Attack
Bruce Lee
Chuckie Egg (i have it but its stoped working )
Chase HQ
Dan Dare
Enduro Racer
Jetpac
Lords Of Midnight
Sabre Wulf
Rex

Re: Spectrum games
You've got to collect three parts of a key to get out of the haunted house using the door to the right of the start screen. There are several other small keys that let you open other doors elsewhere in the house and a bunch of other items that I'm sure you'll figure out in due course.nesmaster wrote:Atic Atac: Its okay but what the hell am i suppose to be doing?
Try the version here:Dictator: Doesn't work.

It's quite a complicated game, so you'll probably need to read the instructions that are on there too.
The Horace games in general are iconic because the first one, Hungry Horace, was one of the best launch titles for the machine. However, they rapidly got bettered by other games and most Spectrum fans who came late to the machines tend to have a similar opinion of them to yours.Horace And The Spiders: Rubbish.
Some other fairly straightforward games I'd recommend are:
Jet Pac - Simple 16K shooter; quite addictive and a challenge to see all the different spacecraft and aliens.
Ant Attack - One of the first 3D isometric games.
Starstrike - A superior Star Wars arcade clone.
Quazatron - The Spectrum version of Paradroid; suitably rendered in isometric 3D.
Turbo Esprit - A driving game that's a distant ancestor of grand theft auto.
Chaos - A multiplayer turn based strategy game between wizards and the monsters they can summon.
I'd also recommend Vulcan, Heavy on the Magick, Lords of Midnight and Tau Ceti but they're all very involved games with a steep learning curve and liable to take years off your life when you get into them.
My personal favourites are:
Auf Wiedersehen Monty
Cybernoid II
Anarchy (thanks, Retroleague!)
Bomb Jack
Saboteur 2
Head Over Heels

Just don't play the speccy version of R-Type. I mean, I know, it was fookin' fantastic when the best you could hope for was a nice juicy speccy in your bedroom hooked up to a colour TV with a half-life instead of a warranty, but these days it's simply disappointing as poo. Some memories are best left undisturbed, play the real one and pretend real hard it was like that on your speccy too.

I wouldn't go that far. Whilst they've probably not got much instant appeal, they're a couple of the most epic Spectrum games in scope and thoroughly recommended to anyone who is prepared to spend the time getting to grips with them.BennyTheGreek wrote:Do not play Lords of Midnight or Legend of Avalon
On the other hand, if all you've got is 30 seconds, stick with Jet Pac.
