Favourite 8-bit vertical shooters?

What were people's favourites with a vertical-scrolling screen on 8-bit computers? Personally I think most of the better games were of the horizontal variety (Wizball, Dropzone, Delta, Armalyte etc) and find it harder to think of any in the vertical format that really cut it. And I still have nightmares about playing the C64 version of 1942...

I've a few games in mind that I thought were pretty good though, so was wondering if anyone might make the same choices. You lot first ;)

I used to love Flying Shark on the spectrum.

Another one that springs to mind is Xenon 2 on the Megadrive.

I Ball II, with the Rainbow Ripple weapon! Only ever played the Speccy version, but thought it was ace if tough.

Please, don't anyone suggest Lightforce - utter pants.

I really like Blackhawk by Thorn EMI for the C64. It has two layers , a guided missile when you zoomed out,but then when something gets by it goes into a more traditional shooter mode. Flight of the Valkyries gets a bit old but it's not badly done music.

Ah yes - I'd forgotten that game. Distinctly remember a Clint Eastwood/Firefox influnce and the Wagner soundtrack - will have to track it down a give it another go.

Didn't play I-Ball 2 but I did enjoy the first one on the 64 - great and very original power ups - I think the rainbow ripple thing was the good one on that version too.

Lightforce on Speccy or C64 was pretty good

I also quite liked the c64 port of Gemini Wing

On the Spectrum

Terra Cognita was a good budget vertical shooter.

Marauder , Terra Cresta , War and white heat were all decent as well.

Do Phonix and Gorf count?

Where do Bue max and Zaxxon fit in then?

Do Ad-Astra and Glass on the Spectrum count as vertical?


I also used to quite like Xevious.
I remember I somehow managed to get a copy of the unfinished Atari 8bit version on disk, can't remember where it came from though! May still have it.

Two of the slickest vertically scrolling blasters on the C64 were Hades Nebula and Slap Fight but both were only really any fun if you managed to acquire (and keep hold of) the speed ups, as the basic ship speed was inadequate in both. Wasted opportunities, perhaps?

Swiv was supposed to be pretty good but I've only played a one-level demo of it. For me, the best vertically-scrolling experience to be had on the C64 was levels 2 and 4 of Salamander. Turrican had some vertically-scrolling levels too, but they probably don't count as the shooting angle is still sideways.

There are loads of C64 vertically-scrolling shooters that are good without really standing out (Terra Cresta and Lightforce spring to mind). It's almost as if there are more vertically-scrolling shoot-em-ups that stand out as being outstandingly poor - Dragon Spirit probably being the best example.

Can't speak much for the other main 8-bit platforms, but I have played Flying Shark on the Spectrum briefly and thought it much more playable than the 64 version.

Umm, s'not an 8-bit machine matey... and Xenon 2 on the Master System is pretty lousy.

A few more for the list; Warhawk (Firebird) on the C64 specifically but the Atari 8-bit version is good if you like a challenge, Mission Genocide (Firebird) on the CPC, Havoc (Players) for the C64, Black Hornet (H-Tec) on the C64 and thinking of consoles reminded me about Gun Nac on the NES and Solar Striker on the Gameboy - will that lot do for starters? =-)

Yeah, Slap Fight on the c64 is a good choice, and SWIV on the c64 is indeed pretty good, though it plays a bit differently to its Amiga big brother.

Terra Cresta on the NES is great too. Zanac on the NES is one I plan to spend more time with one day... not too sure what I think of it so far.

I'm sure I'll think of some others in a minute.

Tomcat by Players for the C64 would've been a good alternative for Flying Shark were it not for the oversized plane.

For me, it's no contest. Lightforce on the Speccy, brings back so many memories!
