Game Music

Post by jdanddiet » Thu Sep 11, 2008 4:06 pm

Go easy: my first thread started!

Apologise if this has been discussed before, but I really love game music (also film scores, but that's for another forum...).

Particular faves of mine are Strider, SOR2 and Silpheed (on the Mega Drive/CD), Sanxion and They Stole a Million (C64), Xenophobe and Ping Pong on the Speccy.

Also has anyone got any favourites they could recommend (on any particular format, not fussed)?

For me its;
WarHawk & Monty On The Run for the C64
Turrican II Stryx & SupercarsII for the Amiga was standouts for me. Shadow Of The Beast wasn't half bad either!
For the Speccy - Renegade, Stormbringer & Glider Rider.

Interestingly I've just uploaded on MYSPACE my Monty On The Run remix if anyone is interested!

Oh, Glider Rider. That's a funny one. Almost no point to it and very little real play value but, because of the awesome visuals and wonderful 128k music it somehow doesn't seem to matter :) I've spent many an hour playing it and, for the life of me, I don't know why.

Aaaanyway, back to topic. I love the music from Parallax, the C64 version of Bionic Commando, Sanxion, Thanatos and Hydrofool on the 128k speccy (as well as Glider Rider :) ).
As for later stuff, lots of Saturn and PS1 games (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Xenogears, Ridge Racer 4..). Oh lord, Gradius V on PS2 is great as is the music from every Katamari Damacy game.

I LOVE game music.

I also really love the little jingles that play in Ant Attack, Galaga and Frogger.

Rambo II (C64) game and film.

Double awesome.
"Conan, what is best in life?"

"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women."

Robocop and Spellbound on the Spectrum (128k versions) come to mind, Overlander also had a pretty awesome title tune.

Korobeiniki (Tetris theme tune) should go without saying, its a great piece of music which sounds even better when played with real instruments. Do some youtubing for it if you've not already.

The Nes Megaman stuff is my favourite (1-6), later games in the series were good but didn't have the same impact as the early ones. Megaman 2 and 3 would have to be my favoruites, with Megaman 9 looking to be up there with both of them (early previews sound incredible)
Sonic 2's entire soundtrack was also packed with freat tunes. I absolutely love the Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean, Metropolis, Emerald Hill and Chemical Plant Zones.
Shenmues ambience and atmospherica music still holds a special place for me, as does both Jet Set Radio and JSR Future.

Just bought the Grip extra music for Ridge Racer 6 on the 360. This music appeared originally in Ridger Racer Revolution on the PSone.

Double awesome.

Totally agree with Rambo II also Master of Magic, and Heroes of Karn on the C64 hold a special place music wise.

A bit newer but Black Lamp my first ST game was pretty Jolly.

(C64) Crazy Comets, Monty on the Run, Spellbound, Warhawk, Master of Magic, Thrust, The Last V8 (crap game though), Arcade Classics, Parallax, Wizball - I could go on and on...

(Amiga) Turrican II. I'm sure there's more but I must have been drunk at the time. Settlers? Quite pastoral and reassuringly calming.

(SNES) Those Square RPG soundtracks were and still are unsettlingly good - FF6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana. Konami stuff was all good too - Axelay, Pop'n'Twinbee and Castlevania X.

(PS1) Konami and Square ruled again - Castlevania SOTN, Suikoden 1 & 2, Vandal Hearts were all stunningly good as was FF7 of course. R-Type Delta had a fab soundtrack as well.
