Favourite Flight Simulators

Post by Katzkatz » Sun Sep 07, 2008 4:37 pm

What were people's favourite flight simulators? My top two were F19 Stealth Fighter and F29 on the Amiga. I will give honourable mentions to F15 and F18 Interceptor as well (I didn't get to play them much). I have only ever played Eurofighter and F22 on the PC (and they were a bit too complex for my liking). I didn't have an analogue joystick on my Amiga, but did for the PC.

F-18 Interceptor on the Amiga. The first 16 bit game I ever played. That moment where you choose your takeoff point from the map to see it sweep in right to the cockpit blew me away. Flying under the golden gate bridge (and ejecting the pilot over it :) ), doing a daring flyby of the control tower, landing on the carrier in the bay - awesome moments in a landmark game.

Loved the balance of fun/technicality as well. I don't want an accurate simulation. Falcon was fun enough but I was so sick of stalling when all I wanted to do was fly! They don't make games like this any more, you either get the full on MS Flight Sim realism or the repetitive shoot-em-up action of Ace Combat.

I'm also going to mention F18 Interceptor. What I liked about it the most was the simplicity of it all, taking a fighter jet to the skies & engaging in a dogfight without having to worry about all the technical issues that would come with every other flight simulator. The most memorable bit in this game for me was the mission in which you had to protect the president's plane from enemy jets until it landed safely at its intended destination.

I will try F18(via WinUAE). I just never had it on my Amiga(a friend had it for his).

Has to be Falcon for me loved that game..

Also a quick mention for all flight sim games, if you could not reach top shelf the manual that came with any flight sim was great to stand on as gave you at least 6 inches extra

Played a lot of Chocks Away and Fire Fight on the Archimedes, and also quite a bit of the original Flight Simulator on my mate's old 286 laptop . In fact, I played these games so much that ever since I've used inverted mouse in FPS games, just because it seems more natural.

Chocks away was probably my favourite, if I had to name one..

I'm a sucker for WWI/WWII flight sims. Some of my favourites included Reach for the Skies, Dawn Patrol and European Air War. And some damn game that was released at the same time as Dawn Patrol (there even were vs. features in some mags) that I can't bloody remember the name of...

some research at the underdogs got me the name: Wings of Glory

Ahh I forgot Knights of the Sky. I just used to love playing it in 2 player serial link up mode on the Amiga. I loved landing and then taking off and going behind the other player and gunning him down.

Wing Arms or Propeller Arena.

The first time I saw one, it was some kind of WW2 thing on an old 286 PC at my pal's house. He was flying to France to bomb something and I remember thinking he was a fekkin loser for getting all orgasmic about the fact you could do it in real time.
Thoughts and prayers.

Anyone remember Solo Flight on the C64? I remember our version having full blown speech. "You're low, raise nose!" was one of them :)

Neither of which are Flight Sims.

Pick any of the Microprose games for C64 and you'll find something I've spent too many hours on.

The Jane's range on PC impressed me, though I've not played so many PC sims.

I really enjoy Microsoft Combat flight sim on the PC.
I managed to pick up a big box version, still sealed for £1.50 the other week :)

F - 15 Strike Egale on the PC. I found it had the right balance between sim and fun.
