ufo enemy unknown on the amiga had some wicked looking explosions in it, the explosions looked like they had faces in them.

Syndicate had some good explosions, and although not exactly retro, Syndicate Wars had some immense ones, like razing whole skyscrapers with bombs and so on. Great stuff.

I always enjoyed when all the humanoids are abducted/destroyed and the world explodes in Defender.

I also like the sound of the castle bombardment stuff in DoTC on my ST.

Don't forget Alleykat when the ship plows into the ground, that's just class... and some of the big boss detonations in Turrican and Turrican 2 are very nicely done.
