The old Angry Video Game Nerd thread
I know there's an old thread about this, but I thought I'd bring it back up again as not much was said about him before. I'm a big fan of this guy and love to see him get frustrated, not to mention hear about the classic games. Some of his reviews are both very informative and very funny. Just be aware that a lot of the stuff is intentionally very OTT.
So here's are the links to all the AVGN movies so far - and there are a lot of them now:

I'm rather indifferent to this guy. Some of is stuff is quite amusing (though not as amusing as stuff like Zero Punctuation or Dr. Ashens - if you're going to swear, swear creatively!), and some of the stuff makes me want to hurl large objects at him.
The most annoying thing is that everybody has copied him! Whilst the original was tolerable, doing a search for video game reviews leads to people reviewing rubbish. With the exception of that chap from Birmingham who rates every C64 game as awesome with the exception of Glider Rider (or as anybody from the Midlands call it Gloida Roida)

Not really a fan, seen a few of his videos and chucked the odd time (eg for Bible games) but the whole 'angry' type image is laughable. If he was a mad tourettes guy then fair enough but obviously its his 'image' to be this angry person which doesnt work when hes talking about - computer games
Its like me acting macho reviewing boyband songs !
I much prefer the drunk brummie type reviewing style of the famous 'Paul' on youtube when he reviews Speccy games as its so bad its good

"This rod will be your doom" - Kilik
i think i'm in the same boat, a few things in his videos amused me (being haunted by the "here's Yogi" intro, for example) and i can even relate to some of the ranting but it gets tedious; and as for the imitators he spawned, yeah thanks for that... give me Dr. Ashen any day.psj3809 wrote:Not really a fan, seen a few of his videos and chucked the odd time (eg for Bible games) but the whole 'angry' type image is laughable.
Oh gawd no...! There are some people who have a face for radio, he's got a voice for silent film.psj3809 wrote:I much prefer the drunk brummie type reviewing style of the famous 'Paul' on youtube when he reviews Speccy games as its so bad its good
I kind of like him. Mainly because the production values of his videos are far higher than most people's and he tries to approach reviews in different ways each time with quite a lot of movie references. Watching a video review of someone playing a game is really not that much fun anyway - particularly squeaky voiced teens harping on about Gears of War or whatever. Zero Punctuation seems to be the sharpest critical reviewer out there but even he's becoming a little repetitive now. By the way AVGNs main interst is movies not video games, AVGN is a character he plays apparently. His site at cinemassacre showcases some of his film work.
I'm afraid I disagree, I think the AVGN is great. Yes, he swears, but his reviews are also quite informative and funny, and he really does pick up on the stupid points of games/peripherals that really should have been addressed before they were released (hence his infamous line 'What were they THINKING?') I defy anybody to watch any of his videos and not nod their head in agreement at least once.
And also, the AVGN is only an exaggerated 'character' as well, the real James Rolfe is quite a nice guy and really knows his stuff quite well....I've batted a couple of emails backwards and forwards with him and he seems to really appreciate his fanbase and know what to give them.

I hate most of the Youtube game "reviewer". Most of them are stupid, have a irritating or boring voice. paulisthebest3uk is a great example, his videos are poorly made, really boring, it is not funny and his voice is the worst thing i have ever heard in my life (and i heard a lot of british people talk...)
I like the AVGN. He is most of the time funny, altough sometimes he goes a bit over the edge with it (censored pickle is a great example) and i can relate to him, i swear most of the time while playing bad games.
And he is great in exploiting all the stupid thing in games, even "classics" like Castlevania 2 (bad game) and TMNT (there are people out there who think this is a great game)
And really, how can you say he is bad, when there is that stupid Irate Gamer who copies the style and makes it god-awful

I'd rather have some genuine emotion about the games instead of playing to character and deliberately being OTT.
Fine, many of these will have valid points and sometimes even be amusing, but the 'angry' is not needed in every single one. He could just be honest and have a rant at the rubbish and praise the good stuff.
The character devalues the opinion with these too often for my liking, so I just tend to ignore them all now.
