DEFINITELY get House of the Dead Overkill. It's gory, it's foul-mouthed, it's disgusting and it's f***** up and that all adds up to FUN. It's hilarious.
how accurate is the wii mote for light gun games like these? I have the playstation 3 version and found the move controllers are utterly useless for light gun use. couldn't get through boss sections because they were so inaccurate and inconsistent with aiming.
Not 100%, the Wii is a bit floaty on them all
On a lot of them you can have a target on screen, it helps

But not on Mad dog Mccgree
That game is arse on everything
I've played both the Wii and PS3 HotD Overkill and both were fine for me. I initially had some issues with the Move on the PS3 but once I'd adjusted the angle of the lens then it was fine. Certainly neither version jumps out as "worse". I actually only have the PS3 edition now simply because it has more levels.

In general I've found the accuracy with Wii lightgun games to be pretty good and as Prinny says, most have reticule options anyway. I use it for Ghost Squad for one.

Isn't the HOTD Overkill hand cannon generally well regarded? The Venom and Perfect Shot are lighter, probably cheaper alternatives that reviewed well. Iirc its aPerfect Shot I have.

The Hand Cannon is a nice thing but a little unwieldy perhaps. The biggest issue is that the panel on the top obscures some of the face buttons and iirc, one of those is assigned to grenades in Overkill (or one of the other lightgun games - I forget which but I definitely remember having the issue somewhere).

It does look bloody cool though.

Monster Hunter Tri should be good enough for you to sink a decent amount of time into. Sadly the online died a while before the rest of the Wii games did thanks to the release of MH3U.

I've downloaded something called Super Mario Bros. 3+

Not played it yet but looks from online videos like smb3 levels with new super Mario graphics.

Is it a hack or was this a real release?

Dste's list is a strong one.

Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are absolutely essential. NSMB Wii and DK: Country Returns are great 2D platformer updates. Rayman Origins is good too, not a Wii exclusive though.

Sonic Colours is the best modern Sonic game I've played, you can use your GC controller too.

Twilight Princess is very good, but there is some motion involved, quite cheap now though.

Metroid Other M is a great game for the price.

Metroid Prime Trilogy would be ideal but it's expensive, a cheaper way to play it is pick up the first 2 games for the Gamecube and buy Metroid Prime 3 for the Wii. MP3 is worth buying by itself though, the whole seires is top drawer.

Mario Kart Wii is very good, especially if you have some pals to play with, you can use the Wii Mote and Nunchuck, the GC pad and the classic controller.

Resident Evil 4 is great fun, and very cheap now.

I could recommend a lot more games but these are very accessible.

One cheap and overlooked game I'd throw out there is Mercury Meltdown Revolution. Looks like tat but is actually a decent puzzle game that uses motion controls perfectly, worth picking up for a quid.
Pratty's trade list, updated (October 2017)!

I almost think it's worth getting a wii just for the Metroid Prime trilogy.

I've had a Wii for about 5 years and it had about 50 hours of use.
I was asked to mod one last week so I gave it a go.
A lot of faffing about (compared to the xbox) to get everything setup but it's done now.
I've had a quick go on a few games (a lot have been mentioned here) but I probably won't mod mine.
Probably need another controller as the Wii one is crap when used horizontally.
As for emulation, I'll stick with the xbox.

goldeneye of Mario galaxy for me.

Don't get call of duty black ops. I cant get past the first level as there is that much slow down on the section where you jump out of the plane to shoot the blockade, that I cant get an accurate shot away and fail every time.

If you can, get one that was manufactured before 2010 or so, then you can get the functionality to play GameCube games. Also, softmodding the Wii isn't too hard, and it's worth it just for playing modified games like NewerSMBWii, and also for emulation which it does quite well. ^-^

I didn't play the Wii much, so not sure what games to recommend for you.

I'm glad you mentioned that as I was about to buy any old cheap Wii!

Ones that haven't been mentioned as much -
  • Boom Blox is amazingly addictive, really got that "one more level" appeal to it
  • If you like football games, the Pro Evo series on the Wii are the best football games ever made, (even better than Sensi)
  • Wii Sports alone is worth it. Could never get into Wii Sports Resort though
