What aspects of the game could be better or improved on?

Nothing!
Like a lot of the "classic" arcade games they're nigh on perfect.
Graphics, sound, game mechanics........ all spot-on.

The Spectrum version made Jack look like a Hobbit in a cape? That's about it I think. :)

Bomb Jack could be immeasurably improved by turning it off...

Having to collect a bomb to ignite the sequence. It would be much better if you knew where to start.

The landing strip level with no platforms - far too easy to die at the start of this level.

Automatic power up instead of having to chase the P coin.

I'll think of some more.

This gives the player the option of where to start. Once you learn the patterns you know where to start]depending on where the enemies
(usually the bird/s) start from.

Seriously, you need more practice! :)

It's a classic "risk v reward" mechanic.

For me the only thing that doesn't work is the horrible, stinking monstrosity of a sequel on the spectrum. I still weep when I remember wasting weeks & weeks of real pocket money on that. :(

The Spectrum version could do with some sound; but since it is so brilliantly playable, silence matters not.

The C64: where to start! Ok, biggest issue is the size of the characters - waaaaaaay too chunky. It could have been a fine version, otherwise.

Whilst I enjoy the original Bomb Jack, I definitely prefer the famicom sequel Mighty Bomb Jack with the more platformer-y approach. It has some pretty interesting mechanics, such as being thrown into a torture room for being too greedy. Not sure if this still constitutes as referring to Bomb Jack though, seeing how Mighty Bomb Jack is a sequel. My favourite parts in it really are the scrolling stages.
