Mega Drive Mini. What should you play?

Post by Dudley » Fri Sep 06, 2019 4:24 pm

The start of a marathon.

Leading up to the Euro launch of the Mega Drive Mini I play all 42 games over 4 bitesize parts in order to answer one question only "Which should you be playing when you get it?"

Yesterzine doesn't care if a game was good then, it cares if it's good now and there's some that have very much traveled in the wrong direction.

Part 1 covers Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle up to Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

Nice video. I always thought Comix Zone was stunning to look at but as for the gameplay, hmm.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's the problem with a binary rating system. Because you should certainly play it but you're not going to play it a lot.

There's a jump very early in level 2 I've literally never been able to make. So I occasionally play level 1 but I'm under no illusions I'll ever see the rest. I should probably find a way to cheat it just to see.

There is absolutely worse in part 2. But there is also a lot better. That runs Dynamite Headdy to Light Crusader and I already know I'm going to be unpopular for what I say about one of the games in the middle I'd not played before.

For me, it has to be a leisurely run-through of Sonic the Hedgehog. It's the game that came with the console back in the day and the first MD game I ever played. After that, I'll check out Tetris, Darius and Wonderboy IV

I actually played Sonic and Sonic 2 last night for part 3 and... well let's just say it's interesting. How long is it since you played Sonic 1?

Those middle 2 are going to be a minor issue for the series since I'm not important to have an advance Mega Drive Mini but I agree, you've got to try those regardless because you've never had the opportunity to play them before.

As for Wonderboy, do you mean Monster World 4 or Wonder Boy In Monster Land there?

1) It's a game I play from time to time (usually when I want something nice and easy to help me relax). I've been an active Mega Drive gamer for years. Sonic the Hedgehog will always be a special game to me because it was my big bang into the world of video games and there is no way that I'm going to christen my mini with any other game.

2) I mean Monster World IV.

Yeah that's basically where I end up too with Sonic, at the risk of spoiling, if you hadn't played since the games were new, Sonic 2 is the game you remember Sonic 1 being. Sonic 1 has a lot of slow fiddly bits (Marble Zone!) and when you do go fast it often ends in sudden stops and danger, which 2 does to you a lot less. Also the missing spin dash of course. You of course have current experience so it's different.

Monster World I hadn't played and unfortunately as I'm playing Mega Drive versions not the Mini versions the thing is in Japanese. I really want to go back with the presumably translated version on the Mini though because the 15 minutes I played before getting irretrievably lost was excellent.
