nice topic, dunno how i didn't see this. i like a bit of a good soundscape, the only one that really hits the mark for me is Hubbard's in-game tune for Delta on the C64. Just.... amazing. Astounding piece of work.

Radiant Silvergun and Gradius V are both untouchable in my book (and both by the legendary Hitoshi Sakimoto. I also love the OST to Axelay on the SNES, and the opening track of Psyvariar is pretty great too.

It is not considered a shmup by some but,
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
has some awesome music in it. I had to get the level cheat codes so I could hear the different sound tracks pronto!

Under Defeat has a great, archetypal, Japanese, jazzy-rock soundtrack to accompany the carnage. Love those sort of soundtracks.

Love all the Konami shooter soundtracks - esp Vulcan Venture and Salamander 2*. R-Type Delta has an astoundingly good soundtrack. Lots of old Toaplan shmups have top tunes - Slap Fight, Flying Shark, Truxton et al.
Zuntata (Taito's in-house 'band') did some sterling work on stuff like Raystorm/Layer Section and the magnificent rock-opera cacophany of Darius Gaiden - it's completely mental but I truly love it
* Edit, musn't forget Gyruss - first ever stereo sound in an arcade game and they coudn't have picked a better tune to showcase it...

Gradius V is an astonishing soundtrack. I've got the soundtrack but I've never played the game. Didn't know the composer was so prolific. I'll have to pick up the rest of his stuff. I'm a big game soundtrack fan.
I also love Sanxion's wonderful loading music by Mr Hubbard. Great song. Bloody irritating game.

Oh hell yeah. Every piece of music in that game is brilliant. I have it on my iPod
