Chris Huelsbeck - Turrican I - III and the Super games. Add Apidya (II - sic) to that. That last one seems to be forgotten now. :(

Nearly all Konami games seem to have great music - Gradius and Salamander series; all incredible stuff. But Gradius II and V's soundtracks stand out for me.

Roadblasters? ;)

Anyway, back on subject.....

My vote for best shoot'em up soundtrack goes to either Viewpoint or the arcade version of Flying Shark :)

For me,

Thunderforce III on the Megadrive, Super Aleste (anyone remember that?) and Paradious on the SNES all stick out in my mind as having great soundtracks.

I've played tons of shmups in the past, but none of their soundtracks spring to mind.

Incidentally, if you can count any of the Metroid games as shoot 'em ups, I love the soundtrack for Metroid: Zero Mission on the GBA....especially the updated version of the classic intro screen music.....really sets the mood and lets you know you're in for an epic adventure. :D

For me the best soundtrack I've heard in a shoot-em-up is the amazing Bio-Hazard Battle on the Mega Drive - the pumping bass soundtrack on some levels juxtaposed with the simple yet effective melodies on the others - it's a beautiful balancing act and makes the Mega-CD's AV outputs even the more useful!

Brilliant game too - one of the best shmups I've played in a long time :)

Definitely ANYTHING from RAIZING, Souky has an incredible soundtrack as does Battle Garegga, Dimahoo and Kingdom GP. They just the best music for shumps ever and in particular a track entitled Spiral Locus which was featured in Mahou Daisakusen and Armed Police Batrider, nothing else has got my adrenaline pumping so hard in a shmup as that tune has. Stab n Stomp from Battle Garegga is another favourite.

One game that I still whistle to this day is Sky Kid - does that make me a bad person?
