The problem is, casual readers go into their newsagent in Feb, see an xmas cover and assume it's an old issue that's been sitting there 2 months.
Wouldn't they even pick it up to see what was in it though just on the off chance that even though it's supposedly an old mag there might be something of interest in there?

Short version. No. (although to be fair, that'll be vastly less an issue for RG than for say, EDGE or PSM)

I don't think it is that Chrismassy though, so I think the drop off won't be significant. Apart from a small amount of text about christmas and some holly, the snow actually looks like its part of the Nights thing rather than Christmas.

Yeah, that's my reading too. Very very clever. It gives people an xmas cover on the stealth.
