For me retro is anything that takes people back to a older happier time, for me its the 8-bits of my childhood for someone else it could be 16,32,64 etc, as far as I'm concerned on this subject it is to each their own.

Retro to me is anything that had mass appeal at the time and through constantly changing fashions after a period* of time, it becomes not mass culturally appealing anymore and stylistically it's deemed passe. Thus if you take the GBA for example. It had mass appeal in 2001, you could even get 2nd hand games in your Game shop but due to a shift in what is currently the in thing in hand held gaming (iphones) it now has a niche market hence retro.

The period of time can be anything from a year to 20+ years depending on what's in vogue which is why no one can accurately agree on what system is retro.
