What is retro?

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Sun Aug 12, 2007 11:02 am

I'm mighty peeved with this deathly boring subject, so this thread is now for you to vent any pent-up rage you may have.

Think PC games aren't retro or that Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't deserve to be in the magazine, then shout here about it and not in the actual feedback section as it's getting mighty tiring.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Retro is old, so systems like the Dreamcast, Gameboy Advance and such-like that are classed as retro due to their age are not old enough to be classed like that, in my opinion. Retro to me means 1996 and before. SO Sonic definitely deserves to be in the mag, maybe do a retro inspection on him, rather than a console! Some PC games can be retro, as long as they aren't less than 10 years old.

Retro is in the eye of the beholder.

Some folks only consider 8-bit machines to be retro, others will include 16 Bits, and some will include the 32 bit generation.

For me, anything which pre-dates the PS2/Dreamcast generation is 'retro'.

I don't have anything against the "newer" retro consoles, such as the aforementioned dreamcast, GBA, etc. but there are 3 decades pre-dating 1996 full of video game history. I think that time period should be covered fully before moving to the mid '90s.

For me, retro is anything Pre-2000 (or pre-millennium)

So anything before the PS2, GameCube, XBOX era!

PSX/PS1 only just fits into my 'what is retro' scheme of things

This will always be a prickly subject, and chances are that what is retro to one person will not be retro to someone else (and vice versa). Take the Quake debate... is it old? Certainly. Is it retro? Well, that depends on your definition of "retro", and there lies the rub.

For me - and this is just a personal view - Quake is a modern game that happens to be old, just as there are "retro" games which happen to be new. "Retro" has more to do with concepts than age, and it refers to concepts which are no longer prevalent or in vogue. I don't think Quake would qualify under that definition. Is Civilization retro? Same debate...

Retro is something not up to date!

I would include PS1, PC games older than 5 yrs etc

Quake, Doom etc all belong in retrogamer.

Pointless people arguing about what is retro though - why on earth would someone complain about something 'they' don't think is retro anyway? If its NOT retro in there eyes then read another article!

I ignore plonkers that think they are correct on this subject.

the end.

I would say most things that isn't current or in mass-market use is retro.

Cassettes, vinyls, Playstation One....

But I would also argue that items re-released because of their retro status are still retro even though they're once again widely available, one example being the Rubix Cube.

Well, I'm happy for RG to decide for me what's retro and what isn't - They've been doing ok over the last 40 odd issues

there are examples which are going to defy pretty much any definition of what is retro

Almost there with that one! I think retro can be anything! A "brand new" release for a next gen console could use such game mechanics that it is in essence retro! Cant think of any like that off hand though............

Jet Set Willy Online - its a remake of Jet set willy - its only 6 months ish old - but look at the game! Its online - but its deffo Retro!

Retro Gamer has got to cater for a HUGE amount of people, all with differing impressions of retro - I think they hit the nail on the head with each and every issue. It covers retro remakes - they are not retro in age but in style.
