Disappointed by the A500 feature

Post by Antares » Sun Jul 01, 2007 12:27 pm

I understand RG is a uk based magazine and therefore is focusing on uk developers but in your A500 retroinspection it goes a bit to far. How could you write a perfect 10 list without putting Apidya in it? It is not only the best A500 game of all time but also one of the greatest Shmups ever! But JWWS on second place? Oh come on, nobody outside the UK cares about Snooker simulations. Also many of my all time favourite A500 games are from german developers, like Wings Of Death, Lethal XCess, X-Out, Z-Out, Turrican 1-3, Seven Gates of Jambala, Katakis, Battle Isle, Gianna Sisters, Jinks, Quik & Silva, and so on... sadly none of them was mentioned.

Its just an opinion. They can't please everyone.
I can't believe Kick Off 2 isn't in there, but hey, I didn't write it.

Like he said

Note this isn't the top10 games , just 10 Perfect Games as the title suggests - it's offering a cross-section of the bestgames , looking at different styles and companies - otherwise you could have filled the page with Team 17 and Cinemaware games! .

Having said that , I am very suprised that Wizkid , Moonstone or ICFTD weren't in there - but like RG pointed out "It's practically impossible to name just ten games , for every one we put forward , three other titles were just as deserving"

Personally , I would have liked to have seen games unique to the Amiga , or at least games which were vastly different on the Amiga to any other format

BTW , I consider Battle Squadron or Hybris to be better than Apidya - neither of which I would consider for the title of 'Best Amiga Game Ever' - that , I think , would probably go to ICFTD

It would be interesting to know if it has more readers in the UK or outside?

By the way I didn't want to offend anyone, it's just my opinion.
...but I know some people who think Apidya is a damn good game though I don't know anyone who thinks JWWS is a good game 8)

Hey , you're entitled to your opinion!
JWWS was by far the best snooker sim released to that point - for a sport which is one of (if not THE) most viewed in the UK , it's unsuprising that it was popular. I guess it's one of those regional things - we in the UK would probably have had a similar attitude if a baseball game like RBI had been in the Perfect Ten

Typically, most British mags have about 10/20 per cent of readership overseas. I doubt Retro Gamer is significantly different, regardless of its more niche market.

I can, but then I've always thought KO2 a rather over-rated game. If it was down to a choice of footie sims, Sensi wins every single time (although SWOS is, of course, the best choice for Sensi); seeing as Speedball II also showed up in the list (rightly, in my opinion), another overhead sports game would have been overkill, and Speedball II is more deserving than KO anyway.

Unfortunately Retro Gamer doesn't publish figures, despite being a member of the ABC so it's difficult to know for sure. As examples though.

Games(tm). 20,370 readers, 2,003 outside the UK/ROI.

Games Master : 53,904, Just under 1,500 outside the UK/ROI.

Edge : 35,145, about 7,000 outside the uk, perhaps not surprisingly.

Kick Off 2 should of at least been in the top 100 or best of the rest feature!

The DPS is 'and the rest', not 'best of the rest'. To that end, the selection is pretty random (as evidenced by the one from the C64 article, which somehow managed to show about 20 of the worst games on the platform, several dozen mediocre ones, and scant few decent ones!).

and sometimes it reuses games already in the first ten, which is a bit a waste of space

I never realised you all paid so much attention to it. I'll try and correct this for future issues.

A bit like rats, we're never more than a few feet away from a KO2-Sensi debate!

KO2 FTW! :D

As for the "perfect 10" list, I can't remember all 10 games off hand, but I seem to remember there was no God-game representative (please correct me if I'm wrong) For a machine that had Populous, Realms, Powermonger, Utopia, Civilisation, Railroad Tycoon, Sim City etc. maybe one of these should have had a mention - actually was Theme Park World one of the 10? :?

Anyway, I thought it was a good article overall.
GAME OVER YEEEAAAHHH!

I always thought that Dino Dini's "Goal!" was the best in the Kick Off franchise. However, stick to the Amiga (or ST) version, the console ports were poor.

Also, don't pick Steve Screech as the ref... red cards EVERY game!
