Questions for Reg 'Skramble!' Stevens

Post by DRS » Sun Aug 30, 2020 6:25 am

Hello all - my next interviewee is kind of special for me... and maybe for others who had a Vic-20. The first ever game I played on the Vic (my first computer) was a great (if rock hard) clone of Scramble written by Reg. I know I'm not the only one to have fond memories of it and a big thanks to Frank Gasking who, after many years of trying, tracked down the author, Reg.

Reg didn't start coding games until he was in his forties which of course makes him in his eighties now. I'm really looking forward to hearing about those very early days of coding for the Vic and then C64 - plus the software label Terminal, which published all his 10 games (it was set up by Andrew Hieke in 1981 and Andy went to have a long and successful career in the games biz so maybe an interesting story there, too)

As always, do post any questions for Reg here and I'll get your name in the mag. I'm phoning him this Friday (Sept 4th) and this will be for RG213. Cheers in advance.

Paul

Skramble was one of my favourite games on the Vic-20 as a kid. Though you can ask Reg why he was so evil to only give you one life before you died! That game was tough...

I see a recurring theme here... was Scramble a particular favourite? Or Gridder?
There are no production years, but they seem to end rather early on - how come you didn't go on making more games?
(And I'm thinking many were released by 'Super'soft? Was there a From The Archives on them btw?)

Did you re-use code between games or start afresh?

How did you create the graphics on VIC?

Did you have any unfinished or unreleased titles?

What game of yours was the most fun to develop and which proved the most difficult?

Skramble was pirated and re-released by another company as "Raid on Isram". Was any legal action taken?
