Questions for Chris 'Software Projects' Cannon

Hello all - hope you're staying safe and well and coping with lockdown. If you have a few minutes stuck at home, why not post a question here for my next In the Chair interviewee?

Chris Cannon worked at Bug Byte and Software Projects and was right in the thick of the Liverpool software scene of the early 80s. He worked alongside folks like Matthew Smith and Eugene Evans, plus he worked in the Tandy Computer Centre and often visited the computer shop Micro Digital, so knew Bruce Everiss, Marc Butler and the chaps that went on to found Odin Computer Graphics.

He also wrote The Castle, first for the Oric and later the Spectrum - plus he coded simple games for the TRS-80 and Color Genie, if any fans of those early micros are out there!

As always, many thanks in advance and I'll get your name in the mag. This will be for RG209.

Take care everyone

Paul

If you could send a message back in time to Software Projects circa 1984, what would you tell the firm to do differently in order to maintain the level of success that it had with Jet Set Willy?

What was it that attracted you to the TRS-80, as a gamer and a coder?

Do you think the Color Genie could have been a contender or not so much? ;)

Were you using development hardware or coding straight onto the system?

Did you share ideas and coding tips with the other Software Projects guys?

Did you play test each other's games and give honest feedback?

Is there a project you regret not finishing?

What excellent questions. Cheers both.

I'm phoning Chris up on Monday so if anyone else has stuff to ask, please post here before then. Ta!

Any stories about Matthew Smith that you can share ?

What do you think of modern gaming now ? Console and mobile gaming ?

Do you miss the 80's and the rise of home computers ?

Does it bother you that most people associate Software Projects with Matthew Smith and his games and little else?

How did you compare yourselves to the US companies that were already in the market (and possibly having a bit more professional approach)?
What markets were you targeting - UK only?
What were your inspirations?

Would you (or do you still) program games on retro systems?

Cheers folks - so many good questions! I'll try to get them all in - even if I have to stick them into the main article rather than the boxout (i see the In the Chair this issue had an extended readers' questions section so might try that!)

Really appreicate you taking the time... ta.
