Got a question for a ZX Spectrum legend?

Post by jdanddiet » Fri Feb 14, 2020 6:35 am

Simon Brattel was part of Crystal Computing and Design Design, the software house chums of Crash magazine in particular. He helped create several fantastic games such as halls of the things, dark star and Forbidden Planet.

He also was a hardware wiz, creating several bespoke dev machines for which many of the above were designed, and utilities such as Zeus.

And there was plenty of humour in his games, as shown by the famous high score tables and ceefax censored-take, Spectacle.

Simon's rap sheet includes:-

Dark Star
Forbidden Planet
Halls of the things
Invasion of the body snatchas
Return of the things
Warlock of firetop mountain
Zeus
Zeus assembler
Tank Busters

If you've got something you want to ask Simon ask away!

Why wouldn't Simon tell Jon Ritman how Knight Lore worked when he sussed out how some of its graphics could go behind others before the Head Over Heels author did, and what was Jon's reaction to Simon insisting on keeping schtum over the mechanisms used in the classic Ultimate title?

Do you still have any source code or design documents from that era?

What was the worst bug or glitch you had to fix in a game?

What question did you think we'd ask today, but haven't!?

(I say that as someone who doesn't know the games or system, it could apply to any interviewee).
