Questions for Big Boy Barry (off the telly. In the 90s)

Post by DRS » Mon Sep 23, 2019 3:35 pm

Hello all - my next interviewee didn't make games but he played a lot of 'em on telly and though his mum knows him as Alex Verrey, you will probably know him as Big Boy Barry.

He's probably best known for his time on Gamesworld (broadcast by Sky in the 90s), though a youthful Barry appeared on GamesMaster and he has presented various game related shows on ITV and on Sky's Computer Channel. In the Noughties, he moved in to videogame PR and is still very much into games and the games business.

Of course, ask whatever you want and I'll try to get your name and question answered in the mag. This will be for RG201 but I'm talking to him next week (Thursday October 3rd) so please get your questions in before. Cheers in advance!

Oh and I've started watching the stack of Gamesworld/Barry's Joypad vids on Youtube. Have a look - amazing period pieces with some surprising (for me anyway - I didn't have Sky in the 90s) appearances from David Walliams and Jet from Gladiators amongst others.

Will definitely be asking him about this! https://youtu.be/ibB20PRJ3cg

Enjoy!

Does he still keep in touch with any of the other characters or the presenter, eg David Williams, Bob Mills or Diane Youdale ?

Loved this show, funny as hell back then and no one seemed to take it easy on the young contestants at all.

Also another question....

What gaming does he do now ? Console / mobile etc ?

As an older viewer (I was in my 20s when in started), I found the show too juvenile for my tastes. Was there ever any attempt to get a more adult oriented show off the ground that just didn't fly with those in charge, or was it not a consideration that there was an adult market for gaming in the 90s?

Have you ever had to do PR for a game you really hated?

What is the best promotional gimmick or campaign you came up with?

Do publishers really discuss the Metacritic rating and its effect on sales?

Have you collected lots of freebies/swag?

Did getting your own show with Barry's joypad cause any tensions/jealousy with your fellow videators?

What excellent questions - cheers all! I shall pose 'em all. And keep 'em coming! Oh and I do agree with how they seemed quite happy to crush kids in the challenges - no patronising back in the 90s...

How come you weren’t on series 4? Rumours said you would be the star of the show and have an evil version of you called big boy Benny as your protagonist.

Was it true that the Executioner(Gary Harrod) wore the mask as he was very shy, and even though he was an amazing games player he would crack under pressure with large crowds. So did you choose your characters or where you given them?

Gary was brilliant on Street Fighter 2 he also did the Super Play video for NMS showing you how to do the 2 in 1’s

How are your EA Hockey skills today?

Have you kept in touch with Donna Air?

Do you prefer symmetrical or asymmetrical analogue sticks?

Are you and Charlene still together?

Which videater was your biggest rival? Were the rivalries real or just for show?
