Retro Gamer - issue 197

Post by greenberet79 » Sat Aug 03, 2019 12:31 pm

Oooooooo, smooth cover! Literally it's matt not glossy!

Anyway, looks good. The subscriber cover is really nice.

I see you didn't print my letter though....

Wait, what - an article about Frost Byte? Wow - I'm getting flashbacks to when I was 8 and had chicken pox!

Just opened it and having a swift look through. Not as retro RETRO as I'd like, but there are still some real gems to dig into.

I must quickly say though that I stopped and read the making of Super Robin Hood - a game I remember not being brilliant on the C64. The conversion capers with white print on pale green has just killed my eyes!

Love the Subs cover, it reminds me of an EDGE cover.

Haven't read it all yet, but the Making of Morpheus makes me want to read the Zzap 64 "Diary of a Game" for it. Always loved those back in the day (and even rereading them now).

So Iain Lee skipped the 8 and 16 bit generations? Or just the 16?

I still can't believe he gave away his collection. That would kill me.

I was similar, sold my Speccy and tons of games when i was about 18. After that it was pubs/partying/socialising so i hardly did any gaming. Plus games on the Amiga/Megadrive seemed so dear back then after years of Speccy prices !

Decent issue for me, never been a fan of Shenmue so not too interested in that. Good to see Gemini Wing, big fan of that game and the Star Wars article.

Good issue. Loved the Shenmue feature.

Really loved the subscribers cover, too. Quite "grown up".

Nice issue. Though the articles about the more recent Retro games like Shenmue and The Sims are a nice, read, they are less interesting to me as I have never played them.

I really like the feature about Amiga publisher Black Legend. They had the courage to produce original games in the Amiga's twilight years and kept the Amiga games market interesting for a few more years after Commodore's demise.
This month's Minority Report is also interesting: Never heard of the 'Simple 2000' series for Playstation2 but the mentioned games look like future cult classics.

Black Legend.

So, why DID Football Glory look like a rip-off of SWOS? Was the question asked in the interview? Was there a ‘no comment’ answer or did they licence the sprites from Sensible Software?

So I did wonder about the screenshots of the Amstrad Super Robin Hood - was the CPC ever that much pastel flavoured?

Did the magazine just change layout style? I thought the retail front page reminded me of something from years back, as was some new in-mag layout styles.
