From The Forum issue 187 - Favourite SNK game

Post by NickThorpe » Mon Sep 24, 2018 1:39 pm

Hello everybody, I'm here to ask you a question about SNK. No, not Shingeki no Kyojin, the hit manga/anime series known as Attack On Titan that annoyingly dominates search results for SNK - I'm talking about the SNK that was founded as Shin Nihon Kikaku. You know, the company behind the Neo Geo consoles and all manner of games over the last 40 years. Anyhow, the question is a pretty simple one:

What's your favourite SNK game?

It's a really tough choice for me. The King Of Fighters XIII is about as beautiful and accomplished a 2D fighter as you're ever likely to get, and Metal Slug is brilliantly chaotic fun that is truly tough but fair. However, I put over 100 hours into SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighters Clash on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and had a lot of fun making the most ridiculously overpowered deck imaginable. Even if I hadn't enjoyed anything else on the handheld, that game alone would have justified the purchase to me, and games that good are very rare.

As usual, some answers chosen on a whim will end up in the Mailbag section of the magazine.

I was tempted to say both Prisoner of War and Ikari Warriors as I have great memories of both from the arcade years, but I'll go really old school and say Vanguard. An incredibly innovative and ground breaking shoot 'em up that doesn't get the credit it deserves and really set the company on the way to success.

Outside of enjoying the original Fatal Fury on the Mega Drive I don't really have one as I'm not in to 1 on 1 fighting games BUT I'm intrigued to lean of their pre Neo Geo history on the anniversary collection.

Metal Slug for me. Not only plays like a charm- but that is pretty much all SNK games- but love the artwork and gorgeous design

Fatal Fury, Main Event and King Of The Monsters would be my top choices.

Goal Goal Goal. Great arcade style football game even if the player names are changed and the real rules of football don't fully apply.

It has to be Garou Mark of the Wolves, the pinnacle of SNK's pixel art and the jewel in the crown of the NEO GEO!!

IKARI Warriors was seminal, but for me Guerilla War just edges it due to it being slightly easier to complete unlike IKARI was with its insane difficulty on the last stage.

Ikari Warriors. Just brilliant. Tanks, power ups, 2 players and being able to swim ! Great level design as well

SNK never really done it for me somehow, but Metal Slug Arcade looks great from what I see online. I never saw an Arcade running it so never got to play. I had it on the Neo Geo Pocket and enjoyed it there but the Arcade versions look way better.

I'll go for Neo Turf Masters. They clearly had to put a lot of thought into how to turn golf into an arcade game and it plays in marked contrast to more realistic games with its combination of simple controls but complex courses.

Another vote for the very fun Neo Turf Masters, great fast and fun round of club-bending Golf. I laugh at "Oh NOOOO!" after a particularly disappointing hole.
