Good morning, if indeed it is morning where you are. We are back for our monthly visit, in which we request some memories/opinions from you. This time:

What's your favourite Bitmap Brothers game?

You remember the Bitmaps, of course - those guys with the sunglasses, who did games like Xenon 2, Speedball, Magic Pockets, Gods, The Chaos Engine, Z and more.

As always, some of your replies in this topic will be selected for inclusion in the Mailbag section of the mag, based on inexpressible criteria laid down by the Great Old Ones.

Has to be Speedball 2, I probably played that game more than any other on my Atari ST and I often loaded it up just to hear the music!

Tough one this - I am torn between Cadaver and Gods. If Gods had been a bit smoother then I would have picked it (perhaps the Genesis version is worth trying?), but I think Cadaver wins out for advancing the isometric genre visually and not being run-off-the-mill.

I think it's a bit unfair to remember them as the guys in the dark glasses as only one of them was wearing them, and it wasn't their helicopter in that famous photo either.

Of their games, I think the Xenons were technically excellent, especially the second game coded by The Assembly Line, but their gameplay feels rather dated. They're essentially just memory tests and it's practically impossible to just seat-of-the-pants fly through a level in the way you'd expect from a truly great shooter.

Magic Pockets also hasn't aged that well. I guess it'll go down as an attempt to jump on the Sonic and Mario bandwagon, but lacking in the inspiration of those two series.

Gods, in spite of a somewhat clunky engine, still works because there's nothing quite like it's puzzle based gameplay.

The Chaos Engine also seems to have fared well over time. I'd think that the steampunk theme and the strategic element added by the power-ups lift it well above run of the mill Gauntlet and Commando clones.

Cadaver, Z and WWII are games that I've not really played enough to form an opinion about. I wouldn't really slam any of them though, they just didn't grab me enough after my initial impressions.

And that just leaves the Speedballs, so it's a question of which one. They're all great games, but I'd think that the later games are basically just refinements. The first one got so much right and had such an impact at the time it was released. So, that's the game for me.

Cadaver by a long shot. I was obsessed with it enough to map it out and write up a game solution, which is still kicking about the internet 20 years later.

Chaos Engine was my favorite. They put a lot of attention into supporting the PC back then, and their games were almost peerless on that platform.

Speedball 2, it is genius. My go-to Amiga game. 16-bit perfection. Just about flawless in every way. Any more superlatives and you will need more pages to fit them in.

You can keep your ice creams, I prefer to activate my nodes - it's The Chaos Engine.

Is there any doubt? Speedball 2, not just the best Bitmap Brothers game, but potentially the best GAME ever!!!

On that topic, I just found out today that there's a Speedball 2 HD on Steam.

Not a great fan of their games, I find them generally quite overrated (especially Xenon 2 and Gods). The only ones I really like are the two SpeedBall games, with SpeedBall 2 being my choice. Awesome, fast-paced game with a touch of strategy. Amiga version, of course.
