Retro Gamer - Issue 178

Can't see this on here yet - so apologies if it's a repeat.

Picked up a copy from Smiths - and very impressed with content - the Bob Wakelin pages were great. Have taken out a new sub too :D

However one thing: the printers have completely messed up the printing on about 20% of the pages: cut of bottom of text, pages mis-aligned, some print test mess on others. It's a real bodge. Anyone else have copy like this or did I just pick up a duffer?

My favourite issue for a longtime.

Loving the in-depth look at Goldeneye, the Championship/Football Manager piece by Ian Dransfield is excellent and I'm really glad to see MUD get a mention.

Great issue as always but some of the printing is a bit on the dark side (of the force!)

I'll get me hat...

yes, mine too - I think the paper isn't able to take dark pages like the older shiny paper - hopefully something art dept will take into account

An ok issue for me, personally I think 14 pages of Goldeneye is a bit overkill, at least 4 pages too many but hey ho. I've enjoyed the Enduro Racer, Football Manager & MUD features, so some good stuff in there too.

Yeah good issue for me, never got into Goldeneye, not back in the day and not now but i know how popular a game it was. Need to perhaps give it another chance.

But a fair few good articles for me this month

I like how the Goldeneye article was broken out, it was a long article but I could read easily in bitesize chunks.

Not really a good one for me. Goldeneye was interesting enough and I agree about the way it was written in nice byte size chunks. My copy hasn't got any of the print issues mentioned here which is at least a good point. I hope 3D texture mapped polygons don't show up too often no mater how low res they may be, for me the first gen 3D machines just about make retro due to there limitations. Until the next big thing replaces the 3D its still modern in my eyes, just a little sharper each generation.

Plenty of interest in this one for me, and I'm all for more in depth features when they're a game I like. I'm glad my Perfect Dark mention got into "From the Forum" - my first appearance. :D

I only seem to getting any enjoyment out if the arcade coverage under the unconverted sets the last few issues have been epic for me. Again this paper quality issue is really getting worse rather than getting better..why is the grade of paper gsm and quality so bad in the last year?

A great issue, expecially loved the MUD article (although the dark green captions on a black background for the screenshots were hard to read) and the interview with Jane Whittaker. And just to even up the paper quality issue, I never even notice it.

In the chair: I didn't see that one coming. That's the kind of (I'm guessing) long time brewing features you only get to do because you consistently do good, honest work. The kind of stuff that helps you get nominated for awards.

A most excellent interview. Kudos to the author. :)

In proper retro-style I'm very behind the times as the new issue is almost out but only just read the MUD article and wanted to say how interesting I found it. A real insight into those pioneering days. Great stuff. Though still mulling over the use of the word 'secular' in the opening section. God knows why. Boom, boom.

While I'm dishing out praise, I thought the CRL horror games article similarly shed light on a lost genre (and the persistence of controversy as a marketing tool) in entertaining fashion and the Jane Whittaker interview was fascinating and sensitively handled.

A top issue. And cheers for the nice words about the GoldenEye article. Ta.
