It's also worth noting the age you started buying Retrogamer at.

I was 27 when i started getting it in 2004.

When I was 7 I could play Atari 2600/7800, the Speccy, Commodore 64 and various Arcade games..When I was 17 I was playing the SNES, Megadrive and looking forward to the Playstation.

Somebody aged 27 now, would have been born in 1990.

When they were 7 they'd be playing PS1, Saturn and N64....when they were 17, they'd be playing Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii...

Anyway, I'll stop being Kind of off-topic now.

My opinion is, that PS2 isn't retro. Nor is the GC or Xbox. I think the Dreamcast is about as new as I'll accept as retro.

The PS2 specifically is of no interest to me at all. I have one, but never had any love for it and only for very few of it's games - most of the best ones were on other consoles too anyway.

But does that mean it shouldn't be in the magazine? Not really. I'll read it anyway.

Heard back from subscriptions. An odd email claiming I'd said I'd not received the issue but it had been sent out.

There are no replacements to be had, so extending subscription by one issue.

Grateful for that but it did look like my email wasn't read.

TBPH
I dont mind the PS2 being called "Retro" as its the last good normal system before we got gimmicks and loads of updates
Same with Xbox and GC, but with less games or note (and crud)

It isnt the time for the Wii/PS3/360

I guess what is 'retro' will be determined by sales figures; ie if RG gets 2000 more sales when a PS2 game is featured/on the cover, then no surprise as to which direction things will go.

The problem with that rule is that it prioritises failed platforms over successful ones. It's a rule that says we've got to ignore the Game Boy Advance right now, but the N-Gage and Gizmondo are fair game.

If Retro Gamer applied that rule when it launched in 2004, we'd have put out over 70 issues before we got to talk about the SNES, and ended up with a mag filled with 3DO and Jaguar games while people wondered why we weren't covering the Mega Drive. There'd have been no mention of the Game Boy for the first five years of the mag, and nothing about the Neo Geo for the first ten.

I understand the sentiment, but I don't think it works in practice.

That's really relevant, pretty much what we were saying that RG mag could in theory go forever, as it covers retro and so its systems will never cease, as everything eventually becomes nostalgic, and retro :)

Last official Mega Drive game - Frogger (1998)
Last official Jaguar game - Worms (1998)

Just sayin' :P
