Retro Gamer 167

Post by ianpmarks » Thu Apr 20, 2017 10:35 am

Arrived yesterday - Mario Kart cover.
I don't have a photo, sorry, I'm sure someone else with provide one.

Looks like an excellent read.
Colecovision, Mosaic software, Mario Kart look great

Minor criticisms
Disappointed that the Frogger article tells us nothing about the original arcade game and its making, it is rather a lot of chats with people who wrote home conversions of it. Quite interesting, but not really what it was sold to be.

Also (nitpicking alert) Terry Jones, not Terry Gilliam wrote Erik the Viking.
Edit... I've now read the Mosaic article, and Terry Jones is correctly credited in the main text. It's just the boxout where it is wrong.

Anyway really looking forward to reading this.

Got mine a few days ago. It's one of those issues that has little to keep me glued and sits there with me flicking pages and reading bits n bobs.
Things that are up my street: The Screamer article and the Colecovision article.
The rest... I'll read eventually!

The cover - maybe it's just me but I think I'm getting too old to like covers that look like they are aimed at 5 year olds :(
Zzap 64! covers were moody artwork and I was never ashamed to buy it or read it - but the console mags since the 90's have always looked like little kids should be reading them!

Anyway, as the wife would say.... I'm off to flick through my comic!

Is there more than one cover?
Mine is the one with the Japanese writing on it.

Do we have a contents list?

Mosaic Software sounds good, played a few of their games.

I got the Japanese one, too. Maybe all subscribers did.

There isn't a lot of difference between the two, anyway.

About time Mosaic featured in the mag. Same brilliant titles, and due to the quality and the multiple choice format , many are suited to a quick play and go on mobile devices

Great issue. A lot of things right up my street.

Mariokart, Amstrad, and best of all and article on Screamer.

Really enjoyed this month.

Bang on with the Thimbleweed Park review, as I completed it my thought was "90%". A great adventure but just not quite as brilliant as say, Monkey Island or its sequel, what I realised I liked most about Thimbleweed Park was the town itself, just the general atmosphere, and "feel" of the game. The eerie music for example when you are playing as Ransome, these sorts of things. Also great idea to have the Thimbleweed Park article as well, that was a great bonus.

I agreed completely with Paul Rose in his column, that was something I hadn't really thought of and found myself saying "oh yeah.....!", tell storytelling through the game more, way too much cinematic behaviour in games these days and I think its largely just because "we can". But a lot of it is tedious. So top article.

In the letters section you ask if we want to see the return of Retroshamer? And the answer, from me atleast, is yes.
I enjoyed reading the retroshamer articles back in the day. Bring it back. :)

Strange ad on the back, looks like it was created by a 6 year old - can't be cheap having a full page advert on the back cover and it was there last month also (not quite so crappy last month though)

I wasn't a fan of Retroshamer, thought it came down too hard on the games (rightly or wrongly) rather than exam what or why game was bad.

It's THAT bad, I honestly didn't even see it as an Ad for a game! But now you've mentioned it and I've actually read it... 3d Oids :D http://www.moonoids.com/
Then I watched the videos and it looks complete and utter crap!
