Discuss section - 167

Post by NickThorpe » Tue Mar 14, 2017 10:16 am

Hi all, I'm here to take a sample of your textual emissions for the Discuss section of issue 167. Today's question:

Which game do you consider your retro gaming guilty pleasure?

For me, it's Heavy Metal Geomatrix on the Dreamcast. I know it's a sloppy game, and nobody needs Risk-era Megadeth in their lives, yet somehow I have a soft spot for the combination of big dumb guns and loud music.

First game that springs to mind is the arcade version of Flying Shark, although I'm not sure it's a guilty pleasure? But I love the game more than probably the love it gets or deserves.

Always Chase HQ, regardless of format. Its horribly flawed but for some reason I love it! Having it on a Mame Emulator on my phone has made my life complete!

Probably laserdisc games. Rebel Assaults, Dragons Lair & Space ace etc....very limited gameplay, but enjoy the audio and visuals although nowadays games can do that stuff on the fly anyway!

Wonderboy on the C64. Given a scarcely believable 52% from Zzap! back in the day, its my first go-to 64 game when I fire up the emulator, and I even prefer its gameplay to that of its arcade counterpart. So take THAT, Zzap!! ;)

Dropzone on the C64. I was firmly in the Spectrum camp at school, and I still am. Dropzone is such a playable game though....

Being a cricket fan, I spent hours playing Howzat! on my Speccy which is a frankly terrible game which scored a generous 11% in Crash. Alternative's well-timed release (just as England were winning the Ashes down under in 1987) apparently meant it was a best-seller too

Bruce Lee on the Spectrum. It is very rough in terms of presentation and easy to the point of being trivial but I seem to play it every time I fire up an emulator.

That's a good call. Used to play a ton of Cricket games on eight bit computers, most terrible. But loved cricket so put up with it

My nan bought me a pretty obscure platform game on the Amiga called Nicky Boom, don't think it cost very much but gave me hours of entertainment! Whenever he opened a chest and gold spilled out, he would shout 'YEEAAHHH!!!' so before every opening of a chest, me or my brother would shout something like 'Nicky Boom, are you gay?' or something stupid like that. It wasn't actually a bad little game if I'm honest though, but nothing too taxing.

Rumble Roses - it still plays well, but the subject matter means it's box is one I would hide behind the rest
