From THe Forum - Favourite Survival horror game
We are running an article on Resident Evil for the new year so are keen to know what your favourite Survival Horror games are.
Re: From THe Forum - Favourite Survival horror game
Resident Evil 4. Just like a great music album, crafted and perfected from start to finish, with no filler - an all-time classic. In fact it's the greatest game ever for me, and I'm still not bored with it after countless plays.

Aliens on the Spectrum (US version). Looks great, clever mechanism using six switchable characters, the sensation of going round in circles (in a good way), and most of all the sound effect of the Alien being in the nearby vicinity and the nerve-shredding, quick-fire encounter of you versus them. TENSION!

Resident Evil 0 (Cube) - The first game with bells, whistles, and a huge amount of nobs on. The definitive version.
Project Firestart (C64) - One of the earliest survival horror type games, an incredible achievement for the C64, with tension, many places to explore, mutants, a mystery plot, a damsel to rescue and even more mutants...
Alien: Isolation - Certainly has the ability to completely put the willies up you...

Probably the Dead Space games. They had excellent design, and a great story.

Retro - it has to be the C64 version of Aliens (UK version). Scared the sh!t out of me in a dark bedroom all alone.
Modern - Outlast on PC. Again, in a dark room all alone... you just feel there is someone behind you and you need to look over your shoulder!

Can I vote for Doom 3? That game scared the bejeezus out of me. I guess it isn't quite survival horror though.
Re: From THe Forum - Favourite Survival horror game
Probably not strictly 'survival horror' but Alien Resurrection on the PS1 scared the sh*t out of me. Honestly, just moving forwards an inch at a time was difficult!
Others:
Doom 3 (Xbox)
Haunting Ground (PS2)
Cursed Mountain (Wii)
Resident Evil (GC Remake)
Silent Hill (PS1)

Fatal Frame. I once played it in a garage at midnight (don't ask) and was terrified of what was onscreen but more terrified of what might have been behind me. It was a long night...
Re: From THe Forum - Favourite Survival horror game
My favourite genre. Recently played through Evil within, which wasn't too shabby.
Favourite for me has to be Silent Hill (and like the Resident Evil series, I think '2' perfected it). To me it introduced elements to the survival horror that really enhanced it- particularly in sound and music- and had that psychological aspect that messes with your head, making the game play on your mind after you've turned it off for the night. Sweet dreams.
There's others worth noting; I really enjoyed D when it first came out, the Fatal Frame series was innovative and nice n creepy, and honourable mention to Slenderman- the whole concept of the legend of Slenderman and how it came about was genius.

It has to be the original Resident Evil on PS1. Capcom nailed it first time with excellent gloomy atmosphere and music; The Spencer Mansion is truly unforgettable. Honorable mention goes to Eternal Darkness.
Re: From THe Forum - Favourite Survival horror game
Silent Hill 2, hands down. The atmosphere, the incredible sound design, everything is great.
More recently, Alien: Isolation freaks me out, to the point I haven't finished it. Amazing.
