From The Forum issue 150 - Best Birthday Presents

Post by NickThorpe » Wed Nov 25, 2015 6:07 am

It's that time of the month again! Since we're celebrating a milestone, we thought it'd be nice to look at when you've done it, so the question this time is: what was your most memorable gaming birthday present?

As usual, some posts will go into the From The Forum bit of the mailbag.

For me, it was my 11th birthday - but for all the wrong reasons. A new arcade had just opened in town and I was all set to go with a friend. Unfortunately, we were sitting in my room playing Virtua Racing and disaster struck. I got my foot caught behind the radiator and when I pulled it free, the bloody radiator came off the wall. Instead of getting to play Daytona, I got to wait around for the council to show up and fix it. :(

Getting my first computer, the Spectrum +. Had to wait a bit longer than my mates, i think my parents wanted to make sure this wasnt a 6 month 'fad' kinda thing. Loved playing with my mates rubber one (The Spectrum) and had lots of games (ahem) on C90 ready for that moment when i got my Speccy +. Great memories, some of the earliest games werent the best (Halls of the Things/3d Luna Crabs/Dungeon Master) but back then it was amazing. Just seeing a picture of a Spectrum + (or even the instruction manual) takes me back to those early days when i first got one

Tricky question to answer, when the Speccy and all the best games and the joysticks came at Christmas in our house...

That would be the Nintendo Game & Watch "Fire Attack" I got during the early 80s craze. Initially I wasn't too happy with it because I desperately wanted a Donkey Kong like every other kid, but come 20-odd years later when its price skyrocketed I was more than pleased to have kept the game and box in near-mint condition, ready to fetch a grand old price on Ebay - but then it got stolen.

My 14th B'day, I got Sheep in Space, Jet Set Willy and Tales of the Arabian Nights for my C64.

Tales was my first game that had speech, I got special permission to put the computer in the lounge so I could play it on the 'Big Telly' (anyone else do that?) and got everyone crowded round so they could hear the computer talk.

I was more impressed than they were!

I wanted a Commodore C-16 for my 9th birthday (because my mate had one) but my mum brought me back a ZX Spectrum from Dixons. I don't know why but I'm forever thankful that she did!

When I got Police Quest 1 and 2 for the same birthday, after having spent the previous 4 months staring at the Sierra catalogue and a C&VG review of PQ desperately imagining what it would be like to play those games (and they exceeded expectations!).

I was taken to see Jurassic Park for my birthday (the first film I would see in a cinema!) which itself was great but was made better by the wall to wall of arcades in the cinema foyer! I managed to finish the Simpsons Arcade with some random people before watching the film!

Good times :D

For my 11th Birthday, my mum woke me up with the words 'I've called you in sick for school today' I asked 'why?' She replied 'Because I'm taking you to the grand opening of the big arcade in town. It's a free play day'
Everytime I think of that memory I get the biggest smile on my face

It has to be my 48K Speccy, which I got for my 5th Bithday in 1986!

A close second would be getting my Mega Drive for my 9th Birthday in 1990.

The memory expansion for my Amiga 500. So I could play It Came from the Desert and my jaw dropped on the floor.
