Tough between Gradius and R-Type... but Gradius has never sunk to some of the depths R-Type has* so it wins.

*Super R-Type and Final. Yuck.

Not sure which flavour of Darius you mean (there are many including that obscure Hu-card boss rush thing) but I voted for UN Squadron/Area 88. Very tactical in choice of weaponry and great replay with the random ordering of the levels.

Makes me want to go home and play the SNES version again. Right now.

NEMISIS everytime, fantastic game, great music and those power ups were unique at the time.

A difficult one because for some unfathomable reason, I've always preferred vertical shooters...

Of that list though, I preferred playing Salamander on the Speccy, followed by Nemesis on the GB... I probably should like R-Type, but I never really got into it though...

Vertical shooters on the other hand - that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

R-Type...

I have never been a fan of Horizonal Shooters, generally its vertical that gets me going... However R-Type is something special, regardless of how many times you die (for me a lot) it still keeps drawing you back in.

Gotta be Gradius/Nemesis for me, although most of my experience of it was on the NES. I've now got it on a Direct-To-TV 100+ games thingy and it stands out by a country mile as the best game on there! :D
GAME OVER YEEEAAAHHH!

Will give them a shot then vote, though it's between R-Typa and Gradius. if Pro Gear was on the list I wouldn't have waited though. :D
