Questions for Patricia 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' Curtis

Post by DRS » Thu Jul 30, 2015 2:28 pm

Hello folks - hope you're enjoying the start of the summer.

My next interviewee is Patricia Curtis (formerly Delvin Sorrell) who has been involved in a whole heap of titles for the C64, Amiga and various consoles, including such games as McDonaldland, Super Robin Hood, Xenon 2, Terminator 2 and Sensible Soccer.

Her back catalogue is a real mix of big name ports and leftfield original titles - do click on this link and I'm sure you'll smile when you see the range of stuff she had a hand in http://luckyredfish.com/previous-works

So, as always, please post any questions you'd like me to ask. Many thanks in advance.

Paul

There's a real broad range of genres in her back catalogue, Beat 'em ups, Shoot 'em ups, Platformers, Footie games. What is her preferred genre, and the best game she produced in that genre?

When you were given a game to port between formats, did you look through the original code and try to recreate it? Or did you play the game and try to replicate the gameplay?

What do you remember of working with John and Steve Rowlands?

Do you still use any of the old machines and would you ever code for them again?

Which game do you wish you had written?

I'd love to hear a tale of what it was like to port an SNES game over to the Mega Drive (Clay Fighters 2 / Terminator 2) or Amiga to Mega Drive (Xenon 2)

Also what was your preferred platform to develop for and one that you'd be interested making a homebrew on and what up and coming developers should start with to get a full appreciation of what it means to be a game developer.

I hope that is just a naive question rather than a nasty one.

I'm sure it is an innocent questions Merman. If Patricia wants to talk about that part of her life, I'll include it in the article. If not, I won't! Cheers for the questions folks (especially you Merman mate) - great as always!

Spoke to Patricia yesterday at her Nottingham home. Lovely woman, great stories, epic swearing.

Thanks for posting the questions folks - this will be in RG147.

Till next time!

Just been reading about how she managed to crank out the 16 bit versions of TMNT for Xmas, i really enjoy reading interviews with people who've been in the industry right through from the 8-bits up to the present day. Looking forward to this one, she sounds like an awesome character.

totally forgot about this thread till I saw my question in the magazine

no it wasn't nasty.

however it also isn't naive to not know the life story of every 80s programmer, sorry but I had never heard of this person and a simple explanation would have been easier.

anyway, by far the best part of this months mag, good luck to her its terrible the prejudice she faced and I hope she is happy now

My question for Patricia is: How was working on a game like Xenon 2 in which music has a great role (the soundtrack was a song by Bomb the Bass: megablast)?

David, glad you smiled when you saw your question in the mag - and as i posted earlier, we knew it was a honest question not an underhanded dig at Patricia's transgender identity. Cheers for taking the time to post... and thanks to you too Retrobussala but I'm afraid you missed the deadline for questions a while back! I DID ask the question you posted for Mike Hally by the way BUT his answer was so good, it was lifted to make up part of a boxout... sorry if your name doesn't make it into the mag but i WILL make sure it does if you post a question next time I'm interviewing anyone - promise!
