Guys,

We really need to face facts on this subject once and for all. Yes, even Darran has said that he doesn't feel that easy about the ads being in the mag in the first place. However, we need the magazine itself to survive, and if this is helped by carrying them then that's what it takes.

I know it is a pain, but a similar situation is faced by other magazines across the world - in one or two of the last German Atari ST-related magazines from not so long ago, they also carried similar adverts, although it must be said that their adverts were significantly for much harder stuff than what has been seen in the ads in RG so far. As the magazines were catering for a mature audience anyway (bearing in mind afaik that most if not all Atari users are in their late 20's/early 30's or so now) it was just seen as being a fact of life for the magazine to survive.

Just my ha'penny worth :)

Bear in mind that if you pick up a copy of your free local ads paper it has similar adverts in the back. When it gets delivered, do you quickly snatch it from the doorstep and stow it away out of sight in case your kids pick it up? I didn't think so.

This is a storm-in-a-teacup to me.

Whereas I do not like the ads, and the latest issue's ads are quite blatantly provocative in their content, I do not let them bother me. I do not read the ads pages and skip past them. Providing Imagine keep the content of the advert to a nondescript level I see no harm to anyone - after all, how many daily newspapers have a full page of these ads yet I doubt that anyone moaning on here has bothered to complain to the respective publishers! And how many of you buy Maxim et al and leave it lying around in reach of the young ones?

So you have a 3-year old (or, presumably, older and capable of understanding at least a little of what the ads are about). Keep the mag to yourself or glue the pages together. Problem solved. Or do you find yourself tempted by the ads...

Imagine should keep but temper the content of the ads (if finding replacements is not a feasible option) if it means the 'zine continues to exist. I would rather have something included that I do not like rather than nothing at all.

The IT dept did after about 8 months of buggering about.

In this day and age of internet porn and lads mags to people really still ring those numbers to knock one out. I imagine its just some 50 year old hag, doing her knitting.....

No other games magazine (that I read) has these types of adverts.
Games tm from the same publisher seems to be devoid of these adverts so what's the difference.
Actually, in the past gamesTM has had this sort of advert and still does. But the most recent issue has
- a lot less phone sex ads than Retro Gamer
- text-only ads

360 has them, although slightly less.

The reason is, Games(tm) and 360 can pick up other ads based on their target audience. It's very difficult for a retro mag to pick up enough retro ads at those kind of rates.

So they should just tidy up the current ads. If sex sells and they have to stay, just make them less graphic.

I think there's another risk with these ads as well, that genuine retro game advertisers won't want to advertise any more. I know if I'd bought an ad in Retro Gamer and it appeared alongside some of the ads in the last issue, I wouldn't buy another ad. It's bad for business reputation, and this forum demonstrates enough people are being actively driven away from those pages. The ad space is being devalued.

Regarding the suggestion that we all write to the publisher: It's a bit of a cop-out really - anyone who works at Imagine can pick up the phone or send an email to this forum to bring this to the publisher's attention. There is a personal relationship there. It's easy. Writing a letter is going to take the rest of us much more time and have much less impact.

If I was editor of a magazine and there was this level of negative feedback about any content (even if balanced with some positive feedback), I'd make sure I told my publisher this was going on if I couldn't control that content. If I was not happy about it, I'd be there double-quick.

My problem with them is that I find them to be a vague insult aimed at myself and other readers.

After all, I presume there is a large amount of demographic data floating around and consulted when decisions are made as to "where to advertise our goods and services/who has goods and services that will be interested in advertising in our available advertising space". This means that someone somewhere has a view of the typical Retrogamer reader (i.e. someone like me) and thinks that they will be the sort of person who wants to ring up sex lines.

If I met someone at a party who said to me "you look like the sort who rings up Hot UK Indian Babe Chat at umptysquillion pence a minute", I'd probably smack him one in the chops. Even though I understand the ad space is out of the control of the editorial staff, it still gives a impression that the publisher thinks "you, our customer, look like the sort who rings etc. etc.". You can't (and shouldn't) be able to get away with insulting your customer base.

I used to (indirectly) do some work with advertising with the Sunday Sport - similar sex industry advertising there was sort of OK as it suited the tone of the publication, but in RG it looks hideously out of place and doesn't speak highly of what the publisher thinks of their readership/customer base.

What should be advertised in RG then?

Am not being flippant, just wondered?

If there were ads for PC components, would that imply that all RG readers are nerds who build PCs for fun? I know jack sh*te about stuff like that (cant even work out how to put a picture in my posts :oops: ) but would not be offended by the implication.

And they would say "People aren't writing in, they obviously don't really care".

"This level of negative feedback" is currently "5 out of the entire readership feel strongly enough to post on a forum. Of those only 1 says they won't buy the mag (net loss, about 1/32nd of a page of ads per year)."

Even assuming that guy isn't lying we're not close to the level you need to justify the monetary loss required in dropping the ads or even spending any effort finding other ads.
