From the forum issue 134 - Favourite Saturn game?

Post by NickThorpe » Mon Sep 08, 2014 10:58 am

It's that time of the month again - tell-me-do, what is your favourite game on Sega's big old slab of black plastic?

(Yes, we did print reader comments in the top 25 in issue 128. I'll try to make sure we get different people in if possible!)

Mine is Fighters Megamix. The game had a ridiculous amount of content compared to other 3D fighters of the time, and worked well in both the ultra-serious Virtua Fighter style and the more knockabout Fighting Vipers style.

You took the words away from me there ^^^. Fighters Megamix is also my own favourite Saturn game. I really enjoyed Fighting Vipers so I was utterly blown away by this crossover and the amount of unlockables/bizarre characters. This is one title I'm desperate to see re-released on PSN so I can play it at convenience but Sega's apparent lack of interest in working out how to emulate Saturn games has probably killed that dream stone dead :(
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Saturn Bomberman. 10 players at the same time is just AWESOME! I've got a Saturn - but not that game, so really must hunt it down with all the bits n bobs for a mass multiplayer battle with my rather large family!

I am so torn between Sega Rally and Guardian Heroes, it actually hurts to choose! But I am going to go with Sega Rally, it has the best physics of any joypad driven driving game and just never gets boring. Arcade port perfection.

Sega Rally all the way.
Bought a Saturn the other year almost purely to play this game. I wasn't disappointed.

Boring and predictable, but its Sega Rally for me.

Panzer Dragoon Zwei - no contest. Way ahead of its time and with stunning graphics back then, it was astounding.
Thoughts and prayers.

I think I'll have to go with Virtua Cop 2, since there's not much I like on the Saturn that can't be had elsewhere (and tbh I played this on my Dreamcast).

Guardian Heroes for me. Not a console gamer around this period but played it on a mates Saturn, almost dragged me away from my PC....almost...

Sonic Jam - It may just be a compilation but with the remixed versions of the original games and the 3D free roaming museum mode make it a stand out title to me.

I was going to say Fighters Megamix but I've already been beaten to that

Virtual On. It's giant robots fighting each other with lasers, bombs and swords in an arena, and it comes with a tank controller. What's not to love?

Virtua Fighter 2, the only saturn game to make Playstation owners just a little bit envious.

Virtua Cop 1, without a doubt. The game basically encapsulates my childhood years, both from an arcade and console gaming standpoint. I still play it to this day with my brother.

The Saturn had many great titles and there were several in contention, but in the end I've gone for the ones that remains an experience like no other game... I'm going to have to say NiGHTS... into dreams. The combination of floaty, dream-like gameplay and nightmare scenario boss battles was, and still is, an absolute joy to play.
