Questions for Mev 'Vivid Image' Dinc

Post by mikeb » Mon Jun 09, 2014 6:09 am

I'll be speaking to Mev in the next couple of days and am looking for a few readers questions... Mev moved from his native Turkey to the UK in 1979, starting on freelance projects for various software houses including Firebird and Electric Dreams before setting up and managing his own company, Vivid Image, which brought us the wonderful First and Second Samurai titles, among others.

Here's a list provided by Mev himself of his projects.

"This is the first time I have compiled a full list and looking at it it's not bad is it, if I say so myself? :)

For Enduro Racer on CPC was this mainly a Spectrum port or coded directly on the Amstrad, and was there any difficult parts of the game that was harder to code?

Was a sequel to Hammerfist ever considered?

Can you ask him if when he was working on the C64 Ant Attack conversion, did he spend a long time worrying if he could accurately recreate the boob wobble and skirt uplift from the Speccy original? It's those little details that matter...

You might generally ask him about how he approached converting such an iconic game to another platform and whether he ever chatted to Sandy White about it.

Hoe it goes well Mike!

Why flick-screen instead of scrolling was chosen for Time Machine and Hammerfist (both great games!)? Was it purely a design choice or was it also bound to hardware limitations?

Several of the games you've worked on in the 8-16 bit era have great music (Last Ninja, Hammerfist, Time Machine, First Samurai), what was your favourite sountrack and what is your favourite musician you've worked with?

(Ah, that's a pity. I'd pitched a Making of Time Machine, Mike...)

Do you remember the game Hodja that the Rowlands brothers were working on, before he became a character in Street Racer?

Did Prodigy happen because of your previous work on Ant Attack?

What were the main challenges of converting Enduro Racer?

Cheers chaps... spoke to Mev at great length today... top bloke with some fabulous strories. Merman - cheers for the Hodja question I'd never have thought to ask about that and Mev's answer was rather revelatory about why it never saw the day, so that'll hopefully be in the main mag piece. I didn't have time to dwell much on Time Machine so you'd certainly be able to do a fuller piece on that.

Managed to slip pretty much all of the other questions in too, and Paul yours raised a smile ;)

Mev is a top bloke. I got about 7,500 words out of him myself and got the feeling I could have got twice as much if I'd wanted!
