Hmmmm, pictures, you say?

It was terrifying and nerve-wracking, being up against those two.

I always found Stephanie on Clock Tower 2 scary you couldn't kill her just hide from her and instant deaths/bad endings if you never had the right item
Image

Everytime she appeared she was normally disemboweling the other kids

Also Maxwell of Clock Tower 2 scary game that

Evil Otto (from Berserk), because he killed people in real life.

This thing from Splatterhouse 2:

The last boss from Sonic 2:
Image
He's bloody enormous. The music's all different and imposing, the way he rises out of the ground then slowly stomps towards you...

And the same sort of thing only ten times bigger in Sonic & Knuckles:
Image
Can't find the right picture, but that massive thing there's chasing you whilst the ground's falling away beneath your feet.

These two from The Story of Thor as well:

And this thing from Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow:

This got me thinking, although this enemy isn't a boss it definitely deserves a notable mention:

Those ghosts from Sonic and Knuckles' Sandopolis Zone scared me even more so than the ever scary/panic-inducing drowning music!

Folks, many thanks for all your suggestions. Great stuff. I couldn't include them all and i had half a dozen in my head i wanted to include already (reassuringly, 3 of these were mentioned here by you so i feel vindicated!) but a fair few of the bosses name checked here will make it into the final article in RG125.

Cheers for your help!

Paul

THIS.

Trying to get some distance on them to try and shoot with like four handgun bullets and a tube of Smarties was so tense.

Also, Dr Octopus in Spiderman (the PS1 game). The camera looked back at you as he chased you from behind. Was oddly terrifying.

although I hate Resident Evil 6 with as much passion as I hate Bernard Tomic, the boss "Phillip" was downright terrifying; probably the best boss I've ever come across in a game.

I know I'm too late but damn, they definitely got that creature right, especially when it transformed into a horse, unbelievable stuff.

Yes, but I'm cheating obviously, aren't I? ;) hehe

For a more retro boss, hmm.. geez there are just so many .. would need a couple of days to think about it!

Well it's not really a boss as such, but I always used to crap myself when confronted with a Marlboro when playing Final Fantasy 8, mainly because I knew that I had little to no chance of defeating the beastie :D
