Disgusting

Post by Tellah » Thu Mar 29, 2007 9:12 am

The porn has become a running joke. But it's stepped over the mark this month.

The 1/4 page 'mobcam' one is the worst. I don't mean to sound like a prude, but the girls at the bottom of the ad are shagging + the other 2 are too explicit for a non-adult mag.

If you can't get rid of the porn completely, at least remove the shagging. If things get worse than this, I might have to write a letter!

People have some major hang-ups if they're getting all hot under the collar over a few sexy ads. Seriously, it's not like there's a hardcore Jenna Jameson film in the back of the mag. There are many things in this world which are more offensive than a few sexy pouts and nice, big boobs.

Good point, could be adverts for older women such as 'dial a granny' or something, horrible pouts, saggy boobs and ugly women !

On the plus side they cook a great breakfast in the morning

Have you seen this month's issue? Boobs and pouts ala page 3 would be absolutely fine!

I'm sorry to be blunt, but one girl in the mobcam advert appears to be reaching round to pull her ass cheeks apart. I'm sorry - but there is a difference. These ads are just embaressing for normal readers who come across them (phnarr) whilst expecting another page with classic retro gaming articles.

Spot on apart from the page 3 boobs would be OK. I am sick of us just putting up with things because thats just the way things are. This isn't about censorship its about what the advertising team deem acceptible for the magazine.

When did grown men become so prudish?

I agree they can get a bit risque but one should never be embarrassed about human sexuality - this is the domain of giggling primary school children and men who live at home and can't get laid. This is in no way a dig at you BTW.

They're still just sexy women - it's not like it's extreme violence or racism, which are actually things worth getting worked up about. Mostly harmless in the right place. RG is aimed at an older age group which is why these people advertise in it and not K-Zone or comics.

The models in the pics are one thing, but what I'm more concerned about is why the actual women on these chat lines etc. need to do this kind of stuff for money - i.e. talking to sex freaks, sometimes with sick fantasies I won't go into detail describing - it actually makes me kind of sad for them.

I'm not prudish, the reason for these strange reactions is clear...

If you turn to these ads after reading about a man who vomitted up his own spleen in 'Bizarre / Nuts / FHM / Viz etc etc', you're not going to notice them.

If you turn to them after getting nostalgic about your innocent childhood, and reading about great names and games in gaming history - then you're going to get a shock.

And the ads this month are WORSE than those in this month's Viz (except for Viz's own, less explicit, 'mobcam' ad) - and if ever there was a target audience for these ads, Viz is it.

No - lets keep the ads so hairy, sweaty palmed w@nkers like you don't need to sneak into the local petrol station at 2am in the morning to buy yourself a w@nk mag!

Look beyond the comment of my 3 year old daughter and see that we all have a responsibility towards what adverts go onto our retro game magazine. It's a retro magazine for flip sake, not a w@nk mag.

You all want to put up with it because it pays for the magazine and makes you feel more like a 'bloke' We could do with more appropriate adverts, if the ad/marketing dept could be bothered to investigate.

Think about it: the advertisers think that this is the type of advert that we all want to see. They think we are a bunch of pervs. There's a time and place for this stuff, but it isn't retro gamer!
No they don't. They think that they need to fill 4 pages to keep the mag going and a niche title like Retro Gamer has a very small ad market. I put up with it because unlike many people here I can turn several pages at once. It doesn't "make me feel like a bloke", it means that my SPECIALIST INTEREST magazine is only £1 more expensive than its mainstream sister mags. The advertisers don't THINK anything, they KNOW this is how they can fill the pages and keep theirs, and darran's jobs.

Ah the everyone who doesn't agree with me has no morals argument. Always a classic winner. The irrelevant personal insults are a particually good example to be setting to the next generation too by the way.

The bottom line : We don't parent your kids, you do. You're just a slightly less vicious version of the people who want to ban Grand Theft Auto and the like. The content of our adult aimed mag should not be altered to make it suitable for your kids.

Except of course you're quite happy for your 3 year old to read about games where you beat up hookers, so long as they never see a picture of a woman.

Saying that "surely other companies will buy up the space" is like saying "Surely we can all achieve world peace right now". Nice dream, unless you're the one that has to deliver it.

Oh and GamesTM this month DOES have ads for explicit mobile games.

It's getting to the point where you can't have an opinion on this board without someone making you feel like censored for having it. Surely people should be able to voice their opinion on this matter, which I believe is what this thread was started for, without being called a prude or a bad parent?

You did have an alright argument until you turned it into personal insults. All because Dudley doesnt care for the adverts and isnt personally offended by them doesnt make him in your words a 'hairy sweaty palmed censored'. Just as all computer users arent nerds, all people who arent offended by porn arent 'sweaty palmed wankers'.

I find it ironic you go on about 'do you have kids, do you know how to raise them' when you seem to have a mild case of tourettes on this thread. First your wife swearing about the adverts and now you ?

The 'makes you feel like a bloke' thing is a load of crap. What planet are you on ?

The last 15 copies of Retro Gamer i have i havent hardly glanced at the adverts, yes theyre there, i flick over thats it. I didnt wake up and think 'ohhh i need to be all blokey, i know i'll look at those smutty adverts' just as i didnt want to be all blokey and think i'll a) look at porn on the web b) get a dodgy mag from the local newsagents

Yes its a retro magazine not a w*nk mag but what next ? You moaning because the word 'censored' was in an article and your daughter is saying that word ? I dread to hear your overreaction when in the future she picks up 'naughty words' from school, whats your reaction then ? Burn down the school ?

Again you had a half decent argument but turning into insults towards Dudley and the view that you think we're all hairy ****** *****'s just because we havent got our knickers in as much of a twist about this as you have makes your whole argument look very poor

Granted but if people then say theyre not bothered by the ads and just simply turn over then people shouldnt think "No - lets keep the ads so hairy, sweaty palmed w@nkers like you don't need to sneak into the local petrol station at 2am in the morning to buy yourself a w@nk mag! " so it works both ways.

Originally the thread was created to have a normal discussion not a heated one with name calling here and there. Funnily enough the anti-porn brigade is the one which has been the most aggressive.

I'm not that bothered by the ads, wish there werent so many but i can guarantee you that a) my palms arent hairy b) being over 30 and married i dont need to resort to w*nking and c) i dont know of anyone who sneaks into a petrol station at 2am in the morning to get a w*nk mag. Its not the 80's, its the 00's, we have the internet for that IF someone wants that !

Err.. I may be mistaken but I'm sure one of the ads mentioned/was endorsed by Jenna Jameson (arguably the world's most famous hardcore porn star)...

Again someone has mentioned that RG is for grown men, but I reiterate my previous post... if that was the case it should be on the top shelf with the Nuts/FHMs/Maxims etc. The reality is it is stacked with all the other games mags were youngsters are likely to pick it up for a flick through. Even the cover of RG has featured Sonic, Mario etc. so you can't say that a kid isn't going to be interested in that.

Anyway, I was just reaching the end of my favourite monthly porn mag when I turned the page to find a double page spread of retro game import ads... ban this sick filth!
GAME OVER YEEEAAAHHH!

I dont think there will be many 10 year old kids picking up this mag and thinking 'OH MY GOD' look at those adverts.

All because the magazine is for grown men it doesnt mean it should be up on the top shelf alongside porn mags because of some ads in the back of it. What next ? Putting the Sun on the top shelf because of a few nipples ?
