Cracked / Torn Spines

Post by findon » Thu Oct 10, 2013 4:56 am

First up, let me say, I love this magazine, a lot.

I subscribed this year for the first year rather than remembering to get the issues myself on the way into work, however 3 out of the 10 magazines so far have come with a sort of crack/tear in the spine which this month really extends onto the front cover, I am not sure how this is happening, does anyone else have the same problems? It doesn't look like it has been folded as there is no real crease, just a tear.

Obviously, it doesn't change my enjoyment of the contents, but it's just a bit annoying (this month I am even considering going out and buying another copy it is so bad!)

Yes, mine are exactly the same, once every few months :(

How about a game screenshot quiz? Amiga, DOS, Megadrive and Commodore 64.

Mine are normally fine, don't remember a bad one. If it happens regularly to you then I expect it is something on the post office side locally. I would find it annoying too for sure.

Pretty much every issue I get has a broken spine.
I put it down to the post. Maybe the drop from the letterbox to the floor, or maybe from scraping it through the letterbox, folded over.

I have never experienced this myself and I have been getting the mag for years.

It can't be from folding as its practically impossible to fold the magazine across the width, it would have to be curled along the height to get it through my letterbox (just tried it myself...). We also have a basket to catch post, so there is no drop on this side of the door.

FWIW, the last issue I received was damaged exactly as the OP said. I don't recall it happening often though, might have to check.

Here are two links to pictures of my two most badly damaged issues;

It's weird to have damage in this direction, not quite sure how you would replicate it.

I've been buying the issues online (as opposed to subscribing) for the last 55 issues and getting shipped to NZ and not once has there even been any damage. I think that might be because international shipping costs more (5 pounds), but it gets sent in a heavy duty bag.

Those jpgs make it look like the mags have been folded in half or something

Yeah I'm exactly the same- I don't subscribe but usually buy online as no one local sells them any more (all our good mag stores closed down after our big earthquakes). International to NZ, bought mags and bookazines, not once have I had an issue with damage. As Ant points out, they are delivered in extremely good padded weatherproof bags and I'm unsure if you guys get the same.

Most of my RG-issues had these cracks and/or a torn cover this year. Very annoying. I've been a subscriber for 3+ years and never had cracked spines until Feb 2013...

It's a common problem with lots of mags, I have had a few delivered damaged but as I don't keep all the issues it's not really much of a problem although I can see how it is for people who want to keep them.
